Issue with USB connection to Goldnote HP10 and Blusound Icon (ref#X8TBCX)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· Roon nucleus plus running latest version, Issue is with usb connection to Goldnote HP10 headphone amp. This connection works using Qobuz,Tidal etc outside of Roon. However,as soon as I turn the HP10 on Icon is no longer showing as a device in Roon, other than AirPlay. Turn the HP10 off and it reappears. I have reset the Icon, sometimes works but if devices are then turned off either Roon fails to find the Icon or it shows in the Roon menu but doesn’t connect, the Icon displays trying to connect but it never does. Spoke to Blusound they say it’s a Roon issue, spoke to GoldNote and they just say it’s a known problem with some transports. I should add that usb works with Roon,HP10,and iPad/phone.

Both seem to be fobbing you off. The Bluesound Icon is a Roon Ready device, and it should not disappear when you connect the DAC (in this case a headphone amp) to the USB A output. The USB C connector is an input.

Are you using the USB A socket on the Icon? Using the USB C connector turns the unit into a DAC.

Hi @Adrian_Folland

Please don’t post directly in Support. Instead, please follow this link to provide the details of your case to Technical Support: Technical Support Request

Respond to the prompts there to ensure that you’ve performed basic troubleshooting and to ensure Technical Support has the full details necessary to expedite Technical Support’s investigation into the case.

Your responses will create a ticket in Roon Lab’s support tracking system and auto-generate a Community thread in the appropriate section.

Because this Community thread will be in a public forum, please do not include any personal information, such as your email address, postal address or telephone number in your submission.

Thank you.

I agree, particularly Blusound,it seems to me as much of an issue for them as it is Roons. Their argument is that as it works outside of Roon it’s solely Roons problem. Yes,using usb A out.

My apologies. I clicked on support, get help, followed the prompts. Which seems pretty logical to me. Obviously not.

I am confused though. Your link takes me to exactly the same screen that I used, inputting none of the above fits, describing the issue, pressing send.

I can see what happened, you edited the topic title and inadvertently removed the support ticket reference (ref#X8TBCX), which is why on first sight I thought you had directly posted in Support and not submitted a technical support request.

Now restored and topic back in Support

Many thanks,that’s exactly what happened.

Hello @Adrian_Folland,

I completely understand your frustration. It is incredibly annoying to be caught in the middle of hardware manufacturers pointing fingers at each other, especially when you just want to listen to your music.

To get to the absolute bottom of this and find out exactly where the failure is occurring, let’s bypass the Bluesound Icon entirely for a quick diagnostic test.

Could you please try the following?

  1. Unplug the Gold Note HP10 from the Bluesound Icon.
  2. Plug the Gold Note HP10 via USB directly into one of the USB ports on the back of your Roon Nucleus Plus.
  3. Go to Roon Settings > Audio, find the Gold Note, enable it, and try playing music to it directly from the Nucleus.

Why are we doing this? If the Gold Note works flawlessly when connected directly to the Nucleus, it provides concrete proof that the Roon Core has no issue communicating with the DAC.

It would confirm our strong suspicion: when the Gold Note is connected to the Bluesound Icon, their specific USB hardware handshake is causing the Roon Ready (RAAT) software daemon inside the Bluesound operating system to crash. From the perspective of your Roon Nucleus, the Icon simply vanishes because its Roon Ready software unexpectedly died (while AirPlay survives because it runs on a separate, independent process).

If this direct Nucleus connection works, you will have the exact ammunition you need to push back on Bluesound, as it proves their firmware’s USB controller is the component failing to handle the Gold Note.

Let us know how the direct connection test goes!

That’s an excellent idea. I did exactly as you said and there is a flawless connection. I guess it’s now for me to go back to Blusound? From previous experience this can be a fruitless task.

Hi @Adrian_Folland,

Thank you for running that test — that’s exactly the confirmation we needed!

Since the Gold Note HP10 works flawlessly when connected directly to the Nucleus, this conclusively rules out any issue on Roon’s side. The problem lies squarely with the Bluesound Icon’s USB implementation and how it handles the handshake with the Gold Note.

When you contact Bluesound, I’d suggest being very specific: tell them that connecting the Gold Note HP10 via USB to the Icon causes the Roon Ready (RAAT) daemon to crash — the Icon disappears from Roon entirely while AirPlay remains active. That distinction is key, as it points directly to their USB controller in firmware.

You may also want to check if there’s a newer firmware update available for the Icon, as this type of USB compatibility issue is sometimes addressed in incremental releases.

We hope Bluesound takes this. In the meantime, don’t hesitate to reach out if there’s anything else we can help with.

Happy listening! :musical_note:
