Describe the issue

I have been with Roon for 8 years....But recently trying to move my Collection from a 2012 MAC Mini to the new M4 has got my system all screwed up. I currently use an M4 in my office this M4 replaced an Apple M1 Mini unit. It's been well over a month since I've been able to listen to Music...I'm slowly losing my mind because I cannot listen to Music...

Describe your network setup

There is no issue with Networking...all my connections are hard wired through out my house...,

Hey @LarryMagoo,

Thanks for filling out a new thread - sorry to hear you’re still running into issues getting your new M4 squared away with your all your music.

I was able to review your PM with your issues and believe I have the correct idea of your issues - I’ll list them below and certainly correct me if I’m wrong:

  1. You’ve had troubles transferring your 2TB external drive with your local library form your old MacMini to your new M4 running Roon Server.
  2. You’ve attempted to re-access your Macmini to try to transfer your library again, but now cannot access your Roon account on the MacMini.

Is the above correct?

Another thought here - did you ever make any Roon backups when you had your Roon Server on the MacMini? If so, where did you store them / save them?

I think the proper next steps for you are :

  1. Get a saved backup from your Roon Server when it was on the MacMini (save it to an external drive - but one that is separate from the drive you have your local library on)
  2. Get Roon Server up and running on your new M4 again - connect your external drive that has your local library, as well as the external drive that holds your Roon backup.
  3. Launch Roon, and restore from the saved backup. You should be able to select it from the drive.

We’ll start there - let me know how it goes, and if you have any questions along the way. Thank you!

Hi Ben, Currently my old 2012 Mini is still hooked up…What I would like to know is where can I find ALL my MUSIC files? That’s all I need to get one of my M4’s working.

I have external drives to put my Music files on if I can find them. Then get my M4 working and copy over the files…Sounds smooth doesn’t it…I cannot figure it out…I’d be happy to pay someone to do it…I wish I’d never thought of upgrading my two Mini’s but that ship has sailed…I really do not have the skills to put it all together at this point…

Thanks,
Larry

Hi @LarryMagoo ,

Looking over your previously registered Roon Servers, it looks like your Mac Mini had a Samsung 2TB drive connected to it in the previous install, I would try to find that drive again and connect it to your M4.

Then in your M4 Roon Settings → Storage, make sure you add the root (home) folder as watched directories. As it currently stands, it looks like your M4 only has two music folders as watched directories - /The Beatles (White Album _ Super Deluxe) and the art of HIFI.

Hi Noris, To say I’m frustrated is putting it mildly…Can I just pay someone to take a copy of my HDD put on mySamsung 2TB SSD to try and copy my Library into to my M4 MAX Mini?

Thanks,
Larry

Hi @LarryMagoo,

We’re really sorry you’re in this situation, and we completely understand how frustrating it must be. We want to help clarify things so you can get back to enjoying your music.

It sounds like there may be some confusion between migrating your RoonServer and moving your actual music files. Roon itself doesn’t control where your library files are stored. If your music was previously on the 2TB Samsung drive, you’ll need to make sure those files are accessible to your new RoonServer.

To find your music files, check the storage location you had set up in Roon before the migration. Based on our logs, my colleague @noris identified that this was the 2TB Samsung drive. Unless the drive was erased or altered outside of Roon, your music files should still be there.

To use them with your new Roon setup, simply connect the drive to your new computer and copy the files over if you want them stored locally.

We recommend following the steps in our migration guide when changing servers to ensure that you don’t inadvertently skip a step:

Let us know if you need any further clarification—we’re happy to help. Thanks!

Thanks Connor, I will take your advice and try to get things sorted…I miss my music soooo much…Do you suppose an Apple Store could get my music migrated to the proper spot?.

THanks,
Larry

Hi @LarryMagoo,

It’s possible they could help you out with that. You could also try their online support option first. If they can’t help you there they could help you get an in-person appointment.

Dan…thanks much for your reply! I have an Apple store about 40 minutes away…I will try an in person approach and see that that goes.

I know I must seem like a putz 'cause I cannot figure it out…But my problem is simply ID’ing the music Folders…Hell I cannot find them and I know the size of that collection is about 1 TB you’d think that would steer me in the right direction…Well at the very least I hope to learn a bunch from this whole mess…Cheers!

Hey @LarryMagoo,

Not in the slightest - it can be a complex process and you’re certainly not alone! That said, based on your above comment, you do have access to your Music outside of Roon on the external drive, correct? Your only issue at this point is getting Roon to recognize that drive and your folder containing your library?

If that’s the case, here are a few steps you can try yourself:

  1. Plug the external drive into your Mac - do you see it pop up on your desktop? If so, great!
  2. Then, open Roon, and navigate to Roon Settings > Storage
  3. Click + Add Folder
  4. You should see the external drive as an option - are you able to click and add it?

We’ll stop there for now - let me know how the above goes and if you have any questions or troubles along the way!

I have no doubt you will! It’s a useful process to learn! :raised_hands:
