Describe the issue

Problems with the „Focus“-function

Describe your network setup

MacMini, headless, Intel Core i5, iOS Catalina 10.15.7
iPad Air, 4th generation, iOS 18.1

I have an issue with „focus“, that isn’t working properly:

On my roon server (MacMini, headless, Intel Core i5, iOS Catalina 10.15.7)
the “show more”-link doesn’t work after some time running roon.

If I click at the end of the “focus-list” e.g. artists (countries, genres, type of artist…) into „show more“, there are no more entries shown, but only the pulsating „roon-logo“.

Sometimes the “show more entries” appear again after a while, sometimes only after restarting roon.

On the roon app on my iPad (iPad Air, 4th generation, iOS 18.1) it’s even worse:

There nothing can be seen under focus (see screenshot) and the only thing that helps is restarting the iPad or roon server.

Are these bugs known?
What can I do to get it working properly?

Hey @Urs_Klauser,

Thanks for writing in! Sorry to hear about your focus issues.

Would you be able to share a set of Roon logs from one of your affected devices? Either your Mac or iPad, please use the directions found here and send over a set of Roon logs to our File Uploader?

In the meantime, lets see if refreshing your Roon and Roon Server instance may help:

Let’s try a fresh database and see if your issues persist:

  • Create a Backup of your current database
  • Exit out of Roon + RoonServer (from taskbar area)
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon Server” and “Roon”
  • Rename the “RoonServer” folder to “RoonServer_old” and “Roon” to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

Here is the process outlined from a macOS machine:

We’ll be on standby for your reply! :+1:

@benjamin
Thanks for your quick answer.
I’ve just sent you the logs by file uploader and will try now to fresh up the database.

@benjamin
After reinstalling Roon and restoring it from my backup, everything seems to be working properly on the Mac at the moment: the focus entries are always visible.
But I still have to check this over a longer period of time to see if it really stays that way or if the error occurs again.

On the iPad (iPad Air, 4th generation, iOS 18.1.1) the issue is still exactly the same as before.

BUT: On my iPhone (iPhone 13 mini, iOS 18.1.1) everything works as it should and all the focus entries are always there.
The problem also seems to be with my iPad - unfortunately it is exactly this device that I always use to control roon on my MacMini (headless!) …

Hey @Urs_Klauser,

Thanks for sending over - however, it looks like you’ve sent over a copy of your Roon Server logs, and we’ll need a set of Roon logs from your iPad -

  1. First toggle “Save logs to Files on next startup” from your iOS Settings for the Roon App.
  2. Reproduce the issue.
  3. Access your Files App on the phone and upload the log file.

Thanks!

@benjamin
thanks, benjamin.
I send you now the logs from my iPad - hope you can find there the issue.

Do you still have the logs from my MacMini?
I found another problem that I had never noticed before because I never needed this feature:
I can’t export my playlists, neither as an Excel list nor as an M3U file.
Only the pulsating Roon logo appears (Excel) or the message “no export process in progress” (M3U) and nothing is saved.

Hi @Urs_Klauser,

Thanks for sending those over! We’ve shared them with development and hope to have more information to share soon.

In the meantime, do you have any specific touch screen settings enabled on the iPad? Or any additional display settings enabled?

Do you see this on the Mac itself, or are you attempting to export using your iPad?

@benjamin
Thanks for your answer.

Yes, on my iPad I‘ve installed „Luna Display“ as an additional display to get access to my headless Mac Mini.

Exporting playlists:
The messages and the issue are on the Mac and the iPad.
Could it be a problem, that I have NOT installed Excell on my Mac? (Because this Mac is for music only).

Hey @Urs_Klauser,

Thanks for the follow-up! We’ll need to reproduce this in-house for next steps, I’ll update you when this has proven successful.

Yes, using Luna Display is likely the issue here - exporting isn’t a function available on tablets or mobile devices.

Hey @Urs_Klauser,

Our team is curious, does switching between using Roon in portrait or landscape mode on the ipad change the behavior at all?

Thank you very much for your great commitment!

That’s an Interesting question, because I always use my iPad in portrait mode. I just tried it in landscape mode - but unfortunately: the same problem. However, I have now noticed that the „focus information“ appears again on its own after a while (about 10 minutes). Even after restarting Roon on the iPad. I can live with that now, it really isn’t that bad. Maybe it’s really just a problem with “luna display”.

Have you found out anything about the other issue with the export of playlists, which doesn’t work on my devices?

Hi @Urs_Klauser,

We have a ticket in to address the Focus issue - we’ll mark the thread accordingly and comment when development has released a fix for testing.

In the meantime, we’ve identified the relevant failure event in logs for the spinning Excel export.

This is not a problem; Roon exports simply as a .csv file that either Excel, Numbers, or any other data processing or text editor program can intake.

The question is why Roon is unable to export content. Can you please share the name of a playlist that is failing to export? What is the content of the playlist - is made of content from streaming services, your local library, or both? Are any of the tracks contained therein marked “unavailable?”

Hi @connor
Thanks very much for your additional info.
I think, you found out the problem, because:
My playlist contains 1430 (!) tracks, both local library and streaming service (quobuz).
And it DOES contains some streaming-tracks, that are NOT available.
Interesting detail: most of them are from Great Britain.

Then I tried it with a smaller playlist (100 tracks), all from my local library -
and there EVERYTHING WORKED PERFECTLY with the export!

But what should I do now to be able to export my large and most important playlist?

Hi @Urs_Klauser,

We’ve prepared a test fix that should be released early next year. If you’re still encountering this on the most recent Roon build, please hang in there a little longer, and we’ll post here once we have more information. Thank you!

In the meantime, we recommend exporting this large playlist as two or three smaller playlists, and then merging separately outside of Roon.

Hi @connor
Thanks for your information.
I’m excited to see what you find out in your test and look forward to your response.
In the meantime, I’ve removed or replaced all the titles from the playlist that were marked as “unavailable”. Unfortunately without success …

Happy New Year and all the best to the whole Roon team!

Hi @Urs_Klauser,

Happy New Year. While we haven’t yet released the fix, but I’ll ping this thread as soon as I have a more fruitful update to share. We appreciate your ongoing patience.
