Describe the issue

I am having issues using the HDMI zone on the Roon Nucleus. I have it plugged into a Roon Ready JBL MA9100HP AVR and it is visible as an audio zone. I can send music to it however there are several issue:

1. It does not automatically turn on the AVR like other HDMI inputs an I have to manually select the input when I do turn on the AVR.

2. When I do start playing music the AVR switches off of the Roon HDMI input to the TV eARC HDMI stopping the music and I have to switch back. Enabling the Roon display after the fact does the same thing.

3. The album art, etc. does not show up on the JBL AVR display like it does with the networked zone selected.

4. After I play the HDMI zone I cannot switch back to the networked Roon audio zone without rebooting the Roon Nucleus. It says it refuses to switch zones.

Please advise.

Pax,
Richard Elliott

Describe your network setup

Symmetrical 1GB Internet, Firewalla Firewall directly connected to the Internet with a TP-Link bridged for wireless. The Firewalla is connected to a Netgear switch to which all of the audio equipment is connected to (not using wireless except for the Roon app on my iPad and iPhone)

Hello @Richard_Elliott ,

Thanks for the report.

Yes, this is expected behavior since the HDMI output from the Nucleus is always on.

Is this when starting to play music via another source to the AVR? Or are you saying that Roon is causing the AVR to switch to the wrong input (TV), when it should switch to another HDMI input?

This is expected behavior at this time, though there are feature requests regarding improvements to this screen, though I cannot share any timelines.

This does not sound like expected behavior. Can you let us know the exact local time + date + track when you next observe this? We will enable diagnostics and see if there are any clues avaliable in the logging.

Thanks!

The reply does not seem to automatically include the questions so I will reply to the numbers.

  1. This is slightly unfortunate since the networked zone does. Maybe turn the HDMI off until it is called upon?
  2. If you have the display to automatically come on in the HDMI zone or turn it on manually it causes the TV and the AVR to say hello and switch to the eARC HDMI connection silencing the HDMI until you switch back. If you can send the Roon TV display out of the HDMI in lieu of the network when the HDMI is in use maybe that could fix the issue?
  3. Thank you, I look forward to it.
  4. This happened today. Played some music on the HDMI zone. Tried to switch to the networked Zone and it says it refuses to switch u til I rebooted the Nucleus.

Richard

Hi @Richard_Elliott,

Thanks for your responses!

For your answers to 1 and 2 — we’re always happy to hear suggestions on how we can improve Roon. If you haven’t already, feel free to make a post in the Feature Suggestions section of Community. Our product team actively monitors that area for user ideas.

As for your answer to question 4 — could you provide a specific date and time when the issue occurred, or the title of the track that was playing at the time? That information will help us locate the event in your logs and get a better understanding of what went wrong.

Did a test switch between the HDMI zone and network zone and it worked today. (#4) Will try again later.

However item #2 was not a feature request but a bug issue that I did replicate.

@5:22 today east coast I started playing music in the HDMI zone and select the corresponding HDMI port of the receiver. Music played fine. Then I went to turn the Roon display on the TV while playing. As a result the receiver switched the HDMI port to the eARC port when the TV came on and displayed the Roon screen. I had to switch the HDMI port back to the HDMI zone input in order to hear the music while displaying the Roon screen on the TV.

Hi @Richard_Elliott ,

I’m having a bit of an issue understanding item #2. Are you able to record a short video and send it to our media uploader below?

Does the same issue happen if you disable the eARC functionality on your AVR?

I uploaded a video last Friday or Saturday. Also the AVR does not seem to have the ability to disable eARC, only disable CEC. Which I did that broke a number of other important functions.it does have a second non-eARC out HDMI port but I will need to run a second cable when I get a chance.

Hi @Richard_Elliott,

Since a few days have passed, I wanted to check in and see if you were able to test out using a different HDMI cable? Let us know if that changed any behavior for you. Thank you! :+1:

I confess I have not since I was waiting to hear back on the video I uploaded per request showing the issue while stating the time of the issue for a log trace. I have had Covid the last few days and have been wiped out but should be able to follow up on cable tests shortly now than I am only 3/4 dead today.
