Issues with Roon Essentials 1.7 and Qobuz Search (ref#BTWKB2)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· Comment:
I am facing problems with search for music in my Qobuz-Account via roon.
My music server is ELAC Discovery DS-S101-G, which runs Roon Essentials 1.7, which now is already 5 years old. Artists being definitely present in Qobuz are not found - most probably because Essentials is too old.
I now consider to buy a Nucleus as server, but have to keep the ELAC to connect my active speakers. Therefore I have questions.
Will the ELAC and a Nucleus work together peacefully in a common network? For example Nucleus as server and ELAC as slave?
Will the roon app be able to control the ELAC running roon essentials only? Is it possible to run the roon app and the roon essentials app at the same time?
Will it be possible to transfer my playlists from the ELAC to a new roon core?
Or, last question, can an update for roon essentials be expected solving this problem?
Regards, Martin

Hello Martin,

Thank you for the detailed description — this is very helpful.

To address the situation directly:

  • Roon Essentials on ELAC Discovery is effectively end-of-life. ELAC has discontinued development and maintenance, and Roon Essentials 1.7 has not received compatibility updates for several years.
As a result, issues like incomplete or failing Qobuz search are expected, and unfortunately no further updates to Roon Essentials are planned to resolve this.

Regarding your questions:

Nucleus + ELAC coexistence

  • Yes, both devices can technically coexist on the same network.
  • In theory, a Roon Nucleus could act as the Roon Core, and the ELAC could function purely as a playback device.
  • However, because Roon Essentials is based on a very old Roon architecture, interoperability with a modern Roon Core is not guaranteed, and we cannot officially support or certify this setup.

Playlist migration

  • In theory, database or playlist migration may be possible, but again, because of the large version difference and the proprietary nature of the ELAC implementation, we cannot guarantee a successful or complete transfer.
  • Any migration attempt would be best-effort only.

What we can do next

We understand this is a frustrating situation, especially given the investment in the ELAC hardware. While the limitations stem from the discontinued Essentials platform rather than your network or configuration, we don’t want to leave this unanswered.

We’ll check internally whether there are any documented migration paths or known compatibility notes specific to ELAC Discovery devices and will follow up with you once we have more concrete guidance.

Thank you for your patience, and we’ll be back in touch as soon as we have an update.

Hello Vadim,

Please let me start with a general remark. These problems are typical for the poor market approach of a lot of German companies. So, I wasted a lot of money.

My plan now is to buy a Nucleus One.

Then I will first try to import a backup stored by Roon essentials on my NAS into the Ron core of the Nucleus. Of course you will neither be able to guarantee that this setup will work at all nor that the playlists will ‚survive‘. But there is simple nothing left to loose - things will only get worse. However, I would appreciate it very much if you were able to find a ‚hidden‘ path for the migration.

And secondly I will try to get the system running with the ELAC just as playback device. If this wasn‘t working I would buy a new WiiM streamer which hopefully works together well with the Nucleus.

So, the plan is clear. Any advice from you for this rescue mission will be highly welcome. I am not in a hurry, first the new device has to arrive here. So, take your time for answering.

Regards,
Martin

Hello @m.stobik1

Thank you for the update.

After searching internally, I can confirm that Elac products can be used as Roon Ready endpoints even when they are not used as a Roon Essentials server.

If you have any issues with the backup restoration process, please let us know here.

Hi @m.stobik1,

Our suggestion from here would be to create a post in the Roon Software Discussion general category (where topic threads are not subject to timers and will not auto-close)

The Roon Community generally responds enthusiastically to gear replacement or upgrade questions, and you’ll likely receive a wide range of suggestions and responses from our seasoned users.

Please let us know if we can provide any additional support in the meantime.

This thread is now closing due to inactivity. Please reach out in a new support request if we can assist with anything further. Thanks!
