Constantly crashes when trying to update the library

Just expanding on this… When I first load Roon Arc, I have no issues. I feel like once I add new albums to my library on the Core things just fall apart. Arc crashes when trying to load recently added. I have a large library if that means anything… I usually end up having to switch to offline mode to use it.

Hi @Edwin_Wong,

Thanks so much for taking the time to write in, and for the additional information you’ve shared.

This is certainly important when it comes to the performance of Roon on your Mac! I took a look at your Roon Server information and currently see:

380,094 Local tracks with 329,579 Tracks identified. This indicates you may be holding ~50k unidentified tracks within your library. Can you share a screenshot of your Roon Settings>Library>Clean up Library (Do not perform a library clean up, we’d just like to see the stats on the clean-up page)

My immediate guess would be if you cleaned up these numbers, you’d likely experience less performance issues. Before doing anything, I would also suggest creating a fresh backup of your current database for safekeeping.

We’ll be on standby for your reply.

It’s actually a PC and I usually do clean up the library every so often. I am starting the backup now. Let me know if you need anything else. Thanks,

bye.

My apologies and thank you for the clarity @Edwin_Wong. Please take note the next time you experience your issue and share the specific date, time, and track playing when this issue occurs.

I’d also test out using a smaller subsection of your library, and see of your issues persist. If I were to guess, the 50k unidentified tracks are almost certainly causing hiccups in your system. Do you have a larger folder of ‘Various Artists’ or the like?

All of my files are tagged even if they’re not identified by Roon. I have my compilations folder broken up into three. Should I break it down further, like by letter? Or do you want me to try playing the unidentified tracks?

Are you able to see when Arc crashes in the logs?

Please check roughly April 15, 2024 @ 3:02-3:07pm. Again, I switched ARC to online mode and tried to download an album. It continuously crashed.

Hi @Edwin_Wong,

About how many tracks are within this compilation folder? What happens if you fully disable this folder?

I moved them out. I’m not sure about tracks but it was about 2000 albums. Arc opened up and downloaded fine (and was functional, for a bit). When I moved them back in, it did start to crash again… What is Roon trying to identify in that folder? Everything has ID3 tags, so what else can be done?

„Unidentified“ means that the album couldn’t be found in Roon‘s online metadata sources (MusicBrainz, TiVo) which goes beyond the file tags. There have been issues recently with performance if there are too many of these because Roon tries to identify them periodically (they may have been added to the online sources).

Roon Labs has been working on improving this in recent updates and I guess (without speaking for Benjamin) that you might be experiencing residual issues related to this.

Hey @Edwin_Wong,

@Suedkiez is quite correct in their response above - are the tracks identifiable in terms of songs being officially released?

While I’m not able to say with confidence yet, it could potentially be a specific album or track causing this behavior. Its possible that it’s the size of the folder itself too, but if you could split the folder up into a few different parts, and test out moving them back in one by one.

A tedious task no doubt, I’m sorry I don’t have any additional next steps outside of this - our team is still investigating additional performance improvements I’m hoping will help cases like yours.

I’ve split the folder up as Various > A/B/C/etc. > Title. Arc is definitely behaving the same. Switching back online, it shows the update albums but it’s crashing (see the logs around April 28, 2024 @ 10:20 a.m.).

Hi @Edwin_Wong,

Checking back in on your thread (apologies for the long delay) are you still running into crashes on the latest Roon update?

It was happening earlier. I ended up deleting it and re-installing it. I’ll see how things go the next few days with the new update and follow-up. Thanks!

Hi @benjamin. It’s still crashing with Build 1413 and Arc 1.0.53 Build 572.

Hi @Edwin_Wong,

Have you re-tested removing the compilation albums out of your watched folders temporarily? We’re still investigating the ongoing sync issues surrounding various artists.

I moved all of the compilations out. It worked alright — I was able to download a few albums. However, switching from offline to online, Arc just crashes repeatedly again. I use offline mode in order to not use data.

Thanks for the status update @Edwin_Wong - our team has a ticket in to further investigate your issue, and I hope to have more information to share soon.

I appreciate your patience in the meantime!

What’s happening?

· It’s been 8 days and I’ve yet to have a response to my issue and I am updating it wondering whether the way classical albums are handled that is behind my issue -- specifically that when I play a classical track the composition is synced to my iPhone in addition to the album which, with my library size, can take a lot of time and a lot of re-trys. Here’s my original issue: I’m having trouble with Roon ARC

Describe the issue

Sometimes downloading an album to my iPhone 15 Pro via wi-fi is quick and easy, sometimes it takes many re-tries to connect to ARC and several re-tries to start the download, sometimes it’s slow to download the album and sometimes it takes many re-tries to succeed. In the past couple of hours, I’ve had one bad experience and one perfect download.
