Hello, when I first started using Roon 1.5 years ago, my existing library imported correctly. Now I have deleted that imported library and am restarting from scratch since I no longer like much of the music I imported.
My library consists of CD’s ripped to .WAV files. The .WAV files don’t contain any metadata tags. The files are arranged in a folder structure e.g., “d:\share\P Drive\Music Roon\Artist\Album”. Here, the Artist is “The Greenes” and the album is “Far Down the Road”
I would appreciate any advice on getting the previous behavior of a correct import with Roon 2.0. Thank you!
EDIT: The results are correct if the album is in Roon’s database — if Roon supplies album cover art, then the Artist and Album are correct. But if not, then the results are incorrect as above.
I strongly suspect that this is the issue. Roon looks for metadata in the track files to help it identify albums and if it can’t find a match, then it will use the metadata to populate the Roon database entry for the album in your Roon Core. And that will include the metadata for the album artist and the cover art.
@Geoff_Coupe The .wav file has never contained metadata, but I remember when I first imported it two years ago, Roon correctly identified the artist and the album. I recall being delighted because I had not anticipated this, and it automatically made Roon usable. It correctly extracted them from (presumably) the folder structure “d:\share\P Drive\Music Roon\Artist\Album”. Perhaps I am mistaken, but has Roon’s algorithm changed?
The current behavior is that it does somehow get the Artist and Album from the folder names, but it uses them to construct the Album name of “Artist - Album”. I can’t imagine how this could be correct for anyone’s music library, and perhaps it is a bug?
Thank you for your patience. Out of curiosity, when you first imported this CD, was it identified by Gracenote? Do you recall when you first imported this CD to your computer? Was it when you first imported it into Roon a year and a half ago?
If you’re able to supply us with an example track from an affected album (The Greenes, for instance), it may help out QA team identify what’s going on. Can please upload a track here and let us know?
Hi Connor, thanks for the reply. Yes, when I first started using Roon a year and a half ago (around the time 1.8 was introduced), I imported my entire drive of .wav files, including this album. Unfortunately, I thought I had saved my original Roon database but have not been able to find it.
As such, I can’t verify for certain if Roon had correctly identified this particular The Greenes artist and album. I now realize Roon is capable of parsing my folder path “artist\album” structure and looking up metadata in its database, and if it is successful, it uses that 100% correctly, so the album is not mistakenly titled “artist - album”. But I don’t know if the album in question was one that was in Roon’s database. Certainly other albums in my collection were identified, but they are a hodgepodge of discs that are in Roon’s database and those that aren’t.
What is certain is that if the album is not in Roon’s database, it is populating the album title incorrectly. It knows the correct artist and album name, because it has used them to lookup metadata successfully if they are in Roon’s database. So, I would think this is a bug that could be fixed. Instead of populating the album title as “artist - album”, it would just use “album”.
I have uploaded an example track from the album shown above, “01 - Glorious Tomorrow.wav”.
My apologies for the wait, but the team is still investigating this issue. I’ll provide an update or next steps here as soon we’ve reproduced and fully documented.
Thank you for your patience. I should be back in touch shortly.
