The Linn Akurate stop playing randomly. It disappear from Roon. Opening Roon on another device will sometimes make it reappear everywhere. Sometimes I need to reboot the server to make it reappear. It’s always visible in the Linn app and can always play music in it. This issue never happen with the Linn app or Kazoo.
It could happen listening to my local music or Qobuz. It’s random.
I wrote about the situation a few months ago and you told me to simplify and upgrade my networking gear. I did: new router, 250mbps connection, all new cat8 cables, new switch. Same issue.
The Roon server is directly connected to the router. It plays from a hard disk connected to it as I thought my NAS could be the problem. It wasn’t, same issue.
My 3 Linn streamers are behind the Netgear switch. I tried a Netgear G105 and a G305. Same issue.
The firmware on the Linn’s were updated as they were released. Same issue.
I tried casting music from a Windows computer to the Akurate for hours using Linn songcast or Windows internal casting to UPnP. Never had any problems, it’s only disconnecting when playing from Roon.
The other streamer don’t disappear as often but it has happened. I’m not using them as often so maybe the problem is the same with them, I just experienced it less often.
(Owner of multiple Linn systems) Linn systems are (surprisingly?) sensitive to network gear choices. Linn recommends unmanaged switches line the GS105, and Cat 5/6 cables. I’m skeptical that Cat 8 is a recommended choice, as shielding can have unexpected effects on equipment that is not designed for it.
As for success with other apps but failure with Roon, note that different streaming setups use the network differently. In particular, “Roon streaming” uses UDP, which is more sensitive to network issues than other schemes that use TCP/IP (such as UPnP/DLNA).
As @wklie noted (and my Linn dealer constantly emphasizes), simple, basic is best with Linn.
I had all cat5 and cat6 before with worst results. Actually cat8 seems to have helped a bit. Pretty sure Linn recommend cat5 and cat6 for exakt link, not for regular ethernet. With Linn streamer Roon use Linn songcast protocol. Which I use from my computer to the streamer without issue. It’s only Roon that loose connection with the player.
Linn Songcast has several different possible configurations, you cannot assume that the way it’s configured from your PC is what Roon uses. In any case, your Windows computer connected to the network the same way as your Roon server? In your situation, I’d put the Roon server on the G305 switch rather than on the router to see if that changes things.
We would not recommend using CAT-7 or CAT-8 due to their specifications.
That’s for LAN, Exact-link is discussed elsewhere. This was also confirmed by my Linn dealer, who installed several systems for me and worked many years before as a networking equipment designer.
I connected my Roon Rock to the switch, change to cat6, same issue.
I contacted Linn, they had my check at my streamer while it’s happening, The “streaming connection lost” icon is present. But the Akurate answer online at it’s IP and shows it’s settings, so it’s not a connection issue. Meanwhile I figure out that if I open the Linn app for a second, the streamer reappears in Roon. So it is 100% a Roon issue.
And not a single answer from Roon support. I’m going to explore other options I guess. Daphile? Audirnava? Too bad I bought a licence for a year.
Thanks so much for your patience while our team navigates through each thread.
Jumping right in, I’d like to run a few additional tests:
Can you please test out connecting your ROCK directly to your primary router, and see if the issue persists? Overall, simplifying your network setup overall during troubleshooting would be ideal. Get your server and Linn devices hardwired to your router, and attempt to reproduce.
From there, re-add each piece of gear back into your network until the issue re-occurs. I realize this is time-consuming, my apologies there.
Lastly, could you please reproduce the issue and share the specific date, time and name of the track playing when the issue occurs?
Once you let me know this info, I’ll go ahead and enable diagnostics for your account so I can review the logging for clues.
If you’d rather do it yourself manually, please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader.
Details :
December 2nd,11:21am.
Track stop playing, Linn lost signal is on.
Elvis Presley - All shook up. From the album Live 1969.
Roon Rock connected to the router. Akurate behind the Netgear 305. I’ll try to connect it directly in the next few days, but the switch serve other important gears so it’s not that easy to remove internet access for other folks in the house.
It just happens again, I was in vacation outside of the country in the last weeks.
Love Can Heal (Dark-Side Mix) - Peter Gabriel, stopped playing at 0:31.
I uploaded the logs. FrancisVidal_2023_12_19
Thanks for the update, and sorry to hear you’re still having issues.
Can you be a bit more specific about this comment? Were you using Arc when this issue happened? Or had you moved your server and Linn to a different location?
And two follow up tests for you:
Can you reproduce this issue with DSP/Muse settings disabled?
Can you temporarily disable last.fm and see if the issue persists?
Another good next step would be to take a look at your router settings and configuration, and see if you’re able to disable any features related to multicast (unless it’s something like “enable multicast over wifi”) or IGMP snooping.
I did test bypassing the netgear switch with no luck. Now there back in my network because I need them to connect other devices.
There is no options for multicast or IGMP in the setup of my current router. It’s a under documented device from my ISP (https://www.msfiber.net/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/GS4220E.pdf). I’m open to try another router to see if it solve my issues. What are the 100% bullet proof router you would suggest that’s available on Amazon US?
I’m not able to provide any network-based suggestions unfortunately as it falls outside of the scope of support.
Outside of that, I would see if there are any options to set your Roon Server device to have network priority, or if you’re able to set it to 5GHz network band, with other devices set to the 2.4GHz band.
Just installed a Ubiquiti unifi dream router and switches. Listen to music for the last 6 hours without interruption. Hopefully that will stay true. If so I finally solved my problem and the router was indeed the issue. I’ll post again next week to let you know.
