Local album found in search but not listed in composer's albums

Content you’re reporting an issue with

In a nutshell, I have the same problem confirmed by user tripleCrotchet in July 2022 here, but never addressed: [Local albums for Composer found via search, but not listed in Composer's albums - #2 by tripleCrotchet](https://Local albums for Composer found via search, but not listed in Composer’s albums)

I have an album of Mahler’s 2nd symphony, conducted by Zubin Mehta. I also have Mehta conducting Mahler’s 1st. When I search for “mahler” the top hit is “Composer Gustav Mahler”. If I ignore this and just scroll down in the “mahler” results, I find both albums (as well as many other Mahler compositions). However, if I click on the “Composer” link and then scroll down to see albums, it shows me all my Mahler albums except for the Zubin Mehta 2nd.

I used dbPowerAmp CD Ripper to rip both of the Zubin Mehta CDs, yesterday, one after the other.

I’ve confirmed with kid3 that the file metadata is all correct and that the “Composer” tag is “Gustav Mahler” (and so are “Artist” and “Album Artist”). When I view the album in Roon and view credits, it says the composer is Gustav Mahler. (Note: the correct full name, not just the last name; as is true of all the rest of my Mahler albums.)

I’ve tried removing the album from the music folder, force rescanning (I see the total number of tracks go down), adding it back, force rescanning (I see the total number of tracks go back up).

Have you made any edits to this content in Roon?

No edits.

Is the album identified in Roon?

I have Roon set to always use file metadata.

Is this content from local files, TIDAL, or Qobuz?

Content is from CD that I ripped to my local NAS.

Description of the issue

Here’s what I get by searching for “mahler”, clicking the composer link, and then scrolling down to see albums. Notice that the Zubin Mehta performance of the 1st Symphony is there, but not the 2nd.

Here’s what I get by searching for “mahler”, clicking “All Results”, scrolling down to see albums, and clicking “More” to see all the albums. Notice that both Zubin Mehta performances show up.

This is a known issue in Roon:

The Roon algorithm cannot display an album both under composition and under performance. (I know - singer/songwriters must get a raw deal).
Looking at your tags, on symphony #2, the Artist is “Gustav Mahler” and the composer is “Gustav Mahler” which is confusing the Roon algorithm. On Symphony #1 the artist appears to be “Mahler, Gustav” which is not the same as “Gustav Mahler” and therefore does not cause confusion.
Like you I use ‘Prefer File’ import settings (including main and other performer credits). In this case I would put only the orchestra and conductor in the artist tag.

BTW - the recording of Bruno Walter conducting symphony #1 is something special.

The solution in the post you referenced was to merge multiple Mahler composer entities. Have you tried that if eliminating Mahler performer credits does not work?

Thanks, that’s extremely helpful! (And also rather surprising… seems like a bug.) Sounds like I should make the “Artist” be the conductor or featured performer, and then just have the composer be the Album Artist.

Tony, my read on that earlier thread was that the OP had both “Bartok” and “Bela Bartok” and that’s why they needed to be merged. As far as I can tell I have only Gustav Mahler, no other composer name variants. But I think the fix that Ralph identified sounds very worth a try! Fingers crossed.

Changing the “Artist” to Zubin Mehta instead of Gustav Mahler worked! Thanks again!
