Description of Issue

My system has worked reliably for years, but with the most recent Roon update it has stopped functioning.

My DACs are recognized by Roon and are enabled but no media, local or streamed, plays. When I hit play I hear the relays switch to match bitrate, but the time counter never leaves 0.00 and it just skips through all tracks on an album before halting.

Roon and CPU restarted. Roon deleted and reinstalled. Logged out and in for Roon and all streaming services. No effect.

Both the Qobuz and Tidal apps are working just fine with my DACs and all other music software works with them, so it’s not network or firewall, this is something specific to Roon communicating to my USB devices.

Unplug power and the usb cable from the dac…what a min then reconnect. Some usb interfaces get power from the computer and don’t reset properly just because you powered off the dac…just a thought to try

Already tried that too, no luck.

Check your bitrate settings are correct some dacs don’t like 32bit

Nope, also I hadn’t changed any settings, the system had been stable for ages and then everything just broke.

I have noted there are now three postings related to playback timing out so I think there’s a bigger problem here than my system.

Hi @Dan_Clark ,

You mentioned you reinstalled Roon, but did you also set the previous database aside? You can use the below instructions to set aside the previous Roon database and start with a fresh one:

  • Create a Backup of your current database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “Roon”
  • Rename the “Roon” folder to “Roon_old”
  • Reinstall the Roon App from our Downloads Page to generate a new Roon folder
  • Verify if the issue persists on a fresh database before restoring the backup

No luck. Even with the backup path changed the new install came up with my old login credentials and services in place, and still has the same issue. There must be somewhere else data is being stored? How do I truly clean my Mac and get a real fresh install?

FWIW maybe add some of the DB rebuild/regenerate function like the NUC version?

Hey @Dan_Clark,

Thanks for the update. Our records show that you may have not set aside your old database properly. Here are a few more detailed steps on how to find your Roon database on your mac:

  1. Head into your library by clicking ‘Go’ from the top bar on your Mac, and then hold down the option key:

  1. From there find your Roon folder, and rename it to Roon_old:

After that, reinstall Roon and it will properly reinstall a fresh version. As always, make sure Roon is not running during this process, and that you have a recent backup saved.

Thanks!

I was in Munich for the show so just got back to try this.

Indeed you are correct, I’d found a Roon folder in another location. Renamed old and downloaded a fresh installer.

I watched and after the installation a new Roon directory was created. I re-logged into my services successfully and loaded my local library.

Unfortunately the problem not only persits, but is now worse. Before it was streaming that wouldn’t play, now nothing does.

Standalone Qobuz and Tidal apps work fine…

Hey @Dan_Clark,

Thanks for the update, and I’m sorry to hear things aren’t back up to proper speed yet. When reviewing your account, it looks like you may be running your core on a different machine at the moment? Which device are you typically using as a core these days?

If you could please reproduce the issue and use the directions found here and send over a set of logs from your core device to our File Uploader, that would be helpful!

I’ll be on standby for your reply. :+1:

I have a Windows laptop we use for tradeshows that I am resorting to as a backup strategy. It is working.

This AM I did try reverting to the MacBook as the Roon server and it’s still not working.

Logs uploaded, for now I am continuing to use the Window server as it works…

It’s been 2 weeks…

Probably my bad for not using “reply” so… :slightly_smiling_face:

Hey @Dan_Clark,

Apologies for the delay in following up! We were able to view a fresh set of your Mac core diagnostics, and have a few questions:

  • Can you play audio to the system output on the Mac?
  • If possible, could you share a screenshot of your audio MIDI screenshot from the Mac, with your USB DACs connected and enabled?
  • Could you temporarily disable HD tracks, and let me know if you’re able to stream audio properly?

I’d also be curious to learn more information around your network setup. If you could please include any additional gear you’re using, that would be helpful!

When you refreshed your Roon database, it should have also refreshed your RAATServer database as well, but lets manually refresh RAATServer just in case:

You can generate a new RAATServer instance on your device by following these instructions, but please be aware that this will reset your Roon Settings → Audio Tab to factory settings and I would advise making a backup of any custom DSP settings you have:

  • Create a Backup of your current Roon database
  • Exit out of Roon
  • Navigate to your Roon’s Database Location
  • Find the folder that says “RAATServer”
  • Rename the “RAATServer” folder to “RAATServer_old”
  • Restart the Roon App to generate a new RAATServer folder

Hi Benjamin, alas none of this worked.

  1. Audio output on Mac same problem.

  2. HD off no effect

  3. Deleted RAATServer and deleted the Roon database again, no effect. New folders were created.

One additional note is I can hear relays responding to different bitrates with the Yggdrassil, it’s just no media will load or play regardless of source. So at least device communication is occurring.

Hey @Dan_Clark,

Thanks for the update. Our team will investigate your core diagnostics further. In the meantime, we do still need a more detailed breakdown of your network setup.

I’d also confirm that Roon is listed as an exception in your firewall properly. You’d need both Roon.exe and RAATServer.exe listed as exceptions.

Thanks!

Network is hardwired ethernet.

Roon is on my mac firewall. There’s no Raatserver application on a Mac to be found, at least in the Library/raatserver, of course it’s not .exe on a Mac… The Mac firewall requires me to locate the application Raatserver to add it, what’s the path? Search doesn’t locate in the usual locations I check.

Hey @Dan_Clark,

You are correct here - I had misread which mac was running RoonServer and which was the remote device. We’ll need a copy of the Roon logs from M1 MacBook to better scan for errors, if you could please use the directions found here and send over a set of logs to our File Uploader?

Lastly, we have seen odd situations when Microsoft teams is included in the audio MIDI settings, where it would reassign the OS audio drivers unknowingly. If possible, could you test out removing or temporarily disabling ‘Microsoft Teams Audio’, see if you’re able to get proper output?

Thanks!

Teams uninstalled, no change. Logs uploaded.
