Local files not appearing in Roon search after moving to external hard drive (ref#YGM2TY)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· After moving local files to a new external hard drive I no longer see them when I search Roon unless I use the focus option to show local files. Prior to the move, I would see my Hi-Rez local files and the Qobuz CD quality files would be listed as a version. How do I prioritize the search to show local files?

Hi @Robert_Kruse,

Thanks for the details.

As a next step, could you please share a screenshot of your current Storage settings (Settings → Storage), showing how the external drive is added?

Also, please try running Library Cleanup:

  • Go to Settings → Library
  • Click Clean Up Library
  • Let the process complete fully

This helps Roon reconcile file locations after a storage move and can affect how local files appear in search results.

Once done, let us know if the behavior changes.

Hey @Robert_Kruse,

Thanks for sharing that screenshot! Taking a closer look at it, is the Fantom-10TB your old drive that hosted your local library?

Did you add the Crucial-Music Files drive as a new watched folder after you migrated your library?

If so, and assuming your library is the same as it was on the prior drive, could you test:

  1. Create a fresh Roon backup
  2. Disable your Crucial-Music Files watched folder
  3. Click the three dots next to your Fantom drive watched folder→Edit→Browse
  4. Update the old drive path with your new library folder location via the Crucial drive. Then click save
Do you see the same issues in this case?

The screenshot you’ve shared is interesting, as I’m not seeing any Qobuz albums like you mention. Can you provide a bit more detail around what you’re referring to with the above?

If it’s an issue with albums being properly grouped in Roon, my steps above should help with that. Let us know :raising_hands:

Thank you!

Hi @Robert_Kruse,

In your original post, you mentioned that search results weren’t populating with the expected primary version (your local copy). However, the screenshot you shared indicates that the local storage location is alive and well from Roon’s perspective.

Can you please provide an example of an album that is behaving this way in search? Please also share a screenshot of the Versions tab for that affected album?

We’ll watch for your reply. Thank you!

I got a bit ahead of myself and added a second instance of the Crucial-Music Files drive as a new watched folder and disabled the Fantom drive as well as the initial Crucial-Music Files drive instead of changing the location of the Fantom Drive as suggested. Before I deleted the initial Crucial drive I noted that both instances of the Crucial drives were being watched and that they each were watching the same number of files. Deleting the initial Crucial file and retaining the newly created second one so that there were not two watched folders appears to have solved the problem I was having and I am now seeing my local files when they exist instead of the Qobuz files.

Hello @Robert_Kruse,

Thanks for following up and for explaining what you found.

That makes sense — having the same folder added twice as separate watched locations can cause Roon to treat them as different sources, which can affect how versions are grouped and which ones appear first in search. Removing the duplicate watched folder and leaving just a single correct path is exactly the right fix.

Glad to hear your local files are now appearing as expected again. If anything else comes up, feel free to let us know!

I don’t know what was going on but it was not a case of having two folders being watched. When I first posted this, I had the disabled Fantom drive and an enabled Crucial drive–only one watched folder. Only after I added a second instance of the Crucial drive and (almost immediately) disabled the first instance did the problem resolve. It was never the case of having two folders being watched.
