Describe the issue

Roon doesn't show my local files version of albums in the discography page of an artist nor in its very own album page when (I'm not sure of this but I suspect) I have already previously added its tidal version to my library and then I remove the tidal version from my library.

I have had various examples of this, I don't know how I resolved a few of them, I tried and tried, like removing the local files from the watched folder, re-adding the tidal version to my library and removing it, and then adding again the local files of the same album to the watched folder (every step was followed by a restart of Roon Server). For reasons to me unknown for some albums it worked, for others it doesn't.

I'll bring one of the examples here: the album Clancy by Twenty One Pilots. I had the Tidal version in my library since it came out, i think. I recently removed it from my library. Then I added the local files of this album to the watched folder, so to my library as well. And i get this very frustrating situation. I'll attach screenshots in the message below.

I'm not sure if it happens only when adding a local file version to the library while having a Tidal version already in Roon library, but I seem to have had this issues only when there was already a tidal version in Roon library before adding my local files.

One thing I noticed is that if I add 1 or all tidal versions of the album Clancy by twenty one pilots, then Roon does show my local version in the versions tab of the album, but it shows the 24bit tidal one on top in the discography page (my local files one is 16bit). I mention it as maybe it has to do with quality(?). I have to go to the album page, group the versions to make my local files one the primary version to make it show on top. But I don't want to have hundreds of duplicate albums in my library just to have a clean discography page. If I add my local files to my library and i have that same album already in my library with a Tidal version, I want to be able to remove the tidal version in peace without having this issue.

I have lost a lot of time to try to make Roon show my local version of a lot albums on top in the discography page. I hope you can help me because it's been very frustrating.

Describe your network setup

I run the Roon Server in my Windows 11 laptop (HP Spectre x360 - 13-aw0013nl), Intel(R) Core™ i7-1065G7 CPU @ 1.30GHz, 1498 Mhz, 4 core, 8 processors, RAM 16GB. I move from 4 different houses a lot, I bring this laptop with me so it's always connected to those 4 Wi-Fi routers and I use the laptop also as Roon remote. I use my Galaxy A54 as a remote too and to use ARC.

The situation of the Clancy album example.
Currently I have removed the tidal versions of this album and I have in my Roon library the local files version of Clancy only.
When I go to artist page in overview i see the local album:

If I click on my local album from the overview page or My Albums I see the other Tidal versions normally:

But then I go to the discoraphy page and I don’t see my local files library version:

If I then click on the Clancy album from the above discography page I don’t see my local files version at all:

I see it if I click the library option

Hello @Riccardo_Sicheri,

Thank you for reaching Roon support.

By default when you open an album with multiple versions, Roon will display the primary copy, which defaults to the highest quality copy available . From the Versions tab, you can pick a different primary copy by pressing Make Primary Version . Inside your library, you can remove an album from the set by selecting the options icon and selecting Remove from duplicates .

Hi,

Thank you, I was aware of those infos, but I’m afraid they don’t solve my issue.

Maybe I didn’t explain myself correctly.

From the link you gave me: “Clicking this tab will display the versions of this album that are available from your library, and below it will display versions on TIDAL and Qobuz when each respective streaming service is connected.”

This does NOT happen for the example album “Clancy”, as I showed you in the screenshots in my previous message. It does NOT show the only version in my library, it only shows the Tidal versions I have NOT in my library.

I have had this issue for other albums too.

To make myself even clearer: for all albums in my library Roon shows my library version on top, even when there are other higher quality versions in Tidal not in my library. It shows my library version on top both in the Disiscography page and in the version tab, like in this example with the album "Killing Me Softly by Roberta Flack:

This happens for nearly all albums in my library. But sometimes, as in the “Clancy” album example, Roon doesn’t show the library version at all, nor in the Discography page, nor when clicking the album from the Discography page and then going in the Version Tab.

Is my issue clear now?

As I said above, this issue has happened only when:

  • I had added the Tidal version of an album to my library
  • then I add my local files to the Roon Library
  • then I remove the tidal version from my library

As you can see in this screenshot Roon doesn’t even show I have the album Clancy in my library, but I do!

Hello @Riccardo_Sicheri,

Thank you for the update, it clarifies everything.

It might be helpful to have the file(s) for testing on our end as well, can please upload them here and let us know?

I uploaded the files of the album “Clancy” by Twenty One Pilots. I have other albums that suffer this issue tho. If needed I will upload some of them too.
By the way, I want to stress that the issue happened in this situation:

Thank you!

The issue just happened again now with another album, this time without the Tidal situation.
I had a CD rip of Graceland - Paul Simon. Just earlier I added another different CD rip. All was good. When I went to the discography page, I saw the album Graceland marked in my library and when I clicked on it, even from the Discography page, and went ot the Versions Tab I saw my 2 CD rips on top, and below the not-in-library tidal versions.
I then deleted my old CD rip, because the new one I added just today is in FLAC and takes less space (the old one was in WAV), and suddenly now when I go to the Discography page of Paul Simon I don’t see my new rip anymore. Same behavior as with the album Clancy - Twenty One Pilots.
When I go to Recently Added and click on my rip of the album Graceland, click the 3 dots and click re-identify, then if I go back to the Discography page of Paul Simon I see my rip correctly on top. But this vanishes every time i restart the Roon Server, meaning this doesn’t permanently solve the issue.
With a fresh Roon Server restart the situation is this one:
Roon doesn’t show me my library version of Graceland from the discography page:

When clicking on the album Graceland from Discography page I don’t see my library CD rip version:

When clicking, in the Discography page, the library little button on top left:

When clicking on the album Graceland when in Discography page with the Library Button clicked, or when in Recently Added album and clicking on it:

What’s strange is that I did the exact same thing for 2 other Paul Simon’s albums: Still Crazy After All These Years and There Goes Rhymin’ Simon.
For both of them I added a new CD rip, it had higher Dynamic range so I deleted (in my windows music folder) the older CD rips of those 2 albums.
But for these 2 albums everything works correctly, as you can see from the previous screenshots, in the Discography page, Roon shows me I have those rips in my library

Hi @Riccardo_Sicheri ,

Thanks for submitting those files and for the additional information. I’ve submitted your report to the QA team to look into this further and try to reproduce the behavior you’re describing. Thanks in advance for your patience while this takes place!
