Local folders not visible in library while Tidal streaming is fine (ref#6WX274)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· Local files won't import or appear

· Tidal streaming okay but no local folders visible in the library.

· Nucleus One is connected to tp-link AX5400 router

Hello @Jon_Post,

Thank you for reaching out to Roon Support.

Since TIDAL streaming is working but local folders are not appearing, the next step is to verify how storage is configured.

Could you please share a screenshot of Settings → Storage in Roon?
This will help us confirm whether your local folders are properly added and accessible to the Nucleus.

Once we see that screen, we can advise on the next steps.

Hi @Jon_Post,

We haven’t seen a response yet but we’ll need a little more information about your local storage location in order to take effective action.

Are you relying on a network share location or internal storage? Had you previously successfully imported files from this Watched Folder, or is this the first time you’re attempting to import?

Have you tried importing via drag-and-drop?

The more information you can provide, the better equipped our team will be to respond with useful information.

Thank you!

Nothing from the local PC is visible. I had tried to “hack” it to point to a OneDrive folder but I realised that’s not supported/possible.

But . . . I didn’t realise that drag-and-drop copying files was possible!

Hello @Jon_Post,

Thank you for sharing the screenshot — that clarifies the situation.

At the moment, no local storage locations are configured in Roon at all, which is why you’re only seeing TIDAL content and no local files. The Storage page you shared is completely empty, meaning Roon has nothing to scan for local music.

A few important clarifications:

  • Roon cannot access files directly from your local PC unless they are:

    • copied to the Nucleus One internal storage, or
    • shared with the Nucleus via a network share (SMB/NAS).
  • Cloud-synced folders like OneDrive are not supported as watched folders.

  • Roon does not automatically “see” files that live on another computer.

How to add local music to Nucleus One

You have two supported options:

Option 1: Copy files to Nucleus One internal storage (recommended)

You can copy your music files directly onto the Nucleus One internal storage over the network. Once copied, Roon will automatically index them.

Guide:
https://help.roonlabs.com/portal/en/kb/articles/adding-folders-using-path#But_what_if_my_local_files_are_on_a_different_device

Option 2: Use a network share (NAS or shared folder)

If your music lives on a NAS or another machine, you can add it as a network share in:
Settings → Storage → Add folder → Add network share

This requires the folder to be shared via SMB and accessible to the Nucleus.

About drag-and-drop

Yes — drag-and-drop copying from your PC into the Nucleus storage over the network is fully supported. Once the files are there, no further setup is required.

After you add or copy your music, you should see the folders appear under Settings → Storage, and Roon will begin importing automatically.

If you’d like, feel free to reply with:

  • where your music currently lives (PC, NAS, external drive), and
  • which option you’d prefer,

and we can guide you step by step.

Okay, drag-and-drop works - I don’t recall seeing that anywhere in the basic setup instructions - however I still cannot point to the local drive…

Have you first Shared the Music folder in Windows using the Jon4Roon user credentials with read/write permissions on the folder? And is Jon4Roon a local Windows account (I suspect it is, but can you confirm?)?

Yep

There’s something very odd going on here.

If you can “drag and drop” files into Roon, then that would seem to imply that you have the optional drive holding music files installed in your Nucleus One. Can you confirm that you have this drive installed and you have formatted it by using the Web Administration Interface of the Nucleus?

Because if you have done this, then I would expect it to show up in Roon’s :gear: > Storage screen, yet your screenshot does not show the Internal Storage folder…

Ah my bad, it turns out that I cannot actually drag and drop - the operation looked feasible in the UI when I dragged a file across to the app - but then I got the “Import error” as per dialogue box below.

The web admin interface is as follows:

OK, so you haven’t got the optional drive for music storage installed in your Nucleus. So then we’re back to diagnosing why you can’t add the shared folder on your PC as a Watched Folder.

Can you try replacing the PC’s Hostname (JON_SURFACE_PRO) with its IP address in the Network share location field of the Add network share screen?

That “Unexpected error” message usually signifies that the network share location can’t be found, perhaps because the hostname can’t be resolved to an IP address.

Hiya, I have the IP address in XXX.XXX.X.XXX format… do I need to prefix it with http:// or https:// or (?)

Nope, the format of the Network share location is

\\XXX.XXX.X.XXX\Music

BTW, you don’t have to obfuscate your internal IP addresses for the forum, you can show the actual IP address inside your home network without fear - it’s your external (public) IP address that you shouldn’t reveal in a public forum…

Nope . . . it didn’t like that either.

Still the same error message - “UnexpectedError”? And you did use the IP address of your Surface Pro?

Yes, that’s correct… I think that’s the only error message I’ve ever seen (?)

I confess that I’m stumped here. @vadim - any ideas? Thanks.

Shall I just reset/reinstall and start over?

You could try that - use the Reinstall button in the Web Administration interface of the Nucleus.

I’ve just added a local account (called roon) to my Surface Pro and tested adding a Watched Folder to my ROCK/NUC system, and that worked as expected…

I’ll also install a new SSD tomorrow and see if that can be formatted and available, in case the issue is with the native storage…
