I use USB as it is the most advanced input for all formats including DSD and Luxman, which sounds better with it. Used Bulk Pet board and technology. But we compared all the inputs on Chord Dave, everything plays great, the sound is magical, the Lumin is a great digital transport.
@wklie What is the status of Airplay 2 on the U1 Mini? I thought I had found my final endgame for network transport with the U1 Mini but was disappointed that it only supports Airplay 1. For family and WAF I need Airplay 2 and there are competing options that do support it (but not having some of the other benefits of the U1). Need ability to group speakers and the added buffering of AP2 provides better reliability. Also, family uses Siri to initiate playlists and specific songs, which requires AP2 support to enable. Very excited about U1 Mini but this one drawback is a showstopper. Thanks.
Not supported.
Currently Apple Music sends lossy AAC over AirPlay2 but lossless ALAC over AirPlay1 of Lumin.
Thanks for the answer @wklie I am aware that it is not supported currently, hence my question about Luminās intent to support it moving forward. AP2 limitation on lossless is going to be fixed soon when support for lossless Apple Music is added to HomePods in a coming software update. Apple has said that publicly. So I get how you want to support highest quality for Airplay but given AP2 getting lossless within next couple months I was asking for your āroadmapā for AP2 support. Or even something like: āwe plan to support AP2 in a future firmware update once Apple enables lossless for AP2.ā My issue is I canāt see spending $2k on a network streamer that isnāt committed to regular software support updates to stay current with the streaming services. And given the other benefits for AP2 vs AP1, Iād think you guys would feel the same. Plenty of audio vendors announce Roon support before getting it released in firmware updates, and that is fine as it gives customers confidence that support is coming. I am asking for same with AP2. AM lossless is new as of the last few weeks, so prior to that there really wasnāt any reason to not support AP2. So can Lumin comments on its intentions here?
Unlikely everyone else (including my teammate) I do not think that is a bug.
No. Currently authentic AirPlay2 requires hardware that is not present in the current Lumin products. Some day if an alternative solution comes up we can look at it, but right now itās just not technically possible.
Peter, your experience, though, is that if I Airplay AM to my Lumin player, itāll be lossless up to 24/48?
16 bit 44.1kHz
Greetings @wklie.
Iāve been feeding my main DAC with USB from my Core machine, which is in the cellar directly below the listening post. I do this so that I can use other ānativeā software, should I want, to feed my system.
I noticed that running from Roon that way causes intermittent pops, so I went to an RPi running Ropieee. The audio artifacts are gone, but by running that way I can no longer also run other audio software thru the same connection.
I see that the U1 Mini supports Tidal, Qobuz, etc, but I didnāt see anything about DLNA.
Do you think that the U1 Mini will be recognized by JShiver running on Roon Core machine and connected via USB?
After much experimentation, I now run bit perfect, so I donāt care about any upsample processing.
Thanks.
I have DLNA/UPnP on my Miniā¦ Canāt see where now (maybe just Lumin Streaming along with Airplay?) but I know I tried it with the Qobuz desktop app but no sound - Qobuz have ceased supporting that beta features as they donāt seem to be able t get it to work with anything so far!
Hmm, Lumin advertises that the U1 Mini supports Qobuz natively.
I guess that means without the Qobuz app?
Are you saying thatās not the case?
That means the Lumin app has Qobuz built in, as it does Tidal and Spotify, no need to stream TO the Lumin so long as you are happy using the Lumin app. You can also use Spotify Connect to stream TO the Lumin if you prefer to use the Spotify appā¦
I think also you might be mixing up what you can do by connecting a DAC directly to your Roon core and what you can do sending data to a Roon endpoint? Apart from HQ Player (I think?) thereās not much you can slip in the way of software between the Roon core and an endpoint on the network. Using Roon, the Lumin is a streaming endpoint connected via Ethernet only.
An RPi endpoint running Ropieee can only use Roon, UPnP/DLNA, and a few other apps.
A USB connection from the same machine that Roon Core is running on is also available to other software, e.g. native Tidal/Qobuz, Audirvania, JShiver, or any app that recognizes a USB connection.
My question is whether JShiver will recognize the Lumin. Probably will.
Oh I see now, well perhaps someone will come along and let you know - Iāve only used the Lumin with itās native app and as a Roon endpoint? It seems a long while ago when one simply put a CD in the drawer and went and sat down to enjoy the music!
Whats a CD?
This is very unusual, what hardware and OS are you using for Roon Core? Does it meet the hardware requirements of Roon? If you are using a Celeron NAS to run Roon Core, donātā¦
Lumin supports JRiver via UPnP. Note that U1 (MINI) has a USB output, not USB input. You cannot connect a Lumin network player / transport to the Core via USB.
You will need to use the Qobuz feature inside Lumin app, or access Qobuz via any OpenHome app (e.g. Linn Kazoo, Bubble DS), without using the Qobuz app.
Itās short for Compact Disc. These are smaller than records. Much smaller. And also digital. You need a CD player or transport to play CDs. It wonāt work on turntables or on Chromecast Audio streamer. CD is also not compatible with Sonos, iPhone or Android phones. You need something to spin the CDs. Which often known as CD player
Iāve run on two Core machines, both running WIN10, a i5 GEN5 NUC and a home built Ryzen 2700Xā¦ The NUC is using Ethernet and the Ryzen was using Ethernet or USB.
The problem might be with a tube in my PL Evo 400 preamp, but it seems to occur less frequently with the RPi connection. It isnāt really a pop, so much as sounding like a slight puff of air, ever so often.
Iāve taken another memberās advice and tapped the tubes, very gently, on the pin side. That seemed to work for awhile. Dunno.
Aha, a key point. I conflated a couple of things in my question, but if JShiver will use it thru UPnP and Qobuz is accessable from a Lumin app, then Iām good. Thanks for the reply.
Sounds positively awful!
Urgh!!
Ah but wait till you see that little silver disc quietly disappear into that great big black Teac VRDS-10 SE tank of a player!!! You go and sit back down, little numbers come up on the display and music comes out of the speakersā¦ thatās it, no bloody internet to go down, no wifi to drop out, no devices saying ālost connection - choose your damn Roon serverā, just a slab of a remote to go backwards and forwardsā¦
