M1 replacement fuse question

The fuse in my M1 is toast. The fuse that was in there was a 5A 250V fuse, but support said it should be a 6A fuse.

Before I replace it, I wanted to make sure support didn’t accidentally hit a 6 (instead of a 5) on the keyboard. Since I’m not the original owner, it’s entirely possible that the previous owner replaced the fuse incorrectly.

FYI–I’m not looking for recommendations on fancy fuses…just something to get the M1 going again that I can source at the local hardware store.

Hi, if you dont get a reply here let me know. I have an M1 but its a pain to get to, where I have it positioned.

I will check it’s fuse for you if you dont have luck here.

Thanks for the offer, Paul.

Support replied after I asked for verification. Either 5A or 6A will be fine.

Yes, 5A / 6A is fine. However, if it is blown again your power supply needs replacement. For that you’ll need to contact your regional distributor. If it is a parallel import or the distributor refuses service, you’ll need to e-mail info@luminmusic.com .

Thanks, Peter. I’m hoping it was simply the result of some storm-related power issues we had recently, but I’ll definitely keep an eye on it.

The fuse replacement didn’t resolve the issue–the unit will still not power up. I’ve reached out to the US distributor to see what my support options are.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

Sadly, I don’t think it makes sense to pay for repair. Here’s what US disti said…

Factory cost to inspect is typically $200 out of warranty and the cost of a new PS could add $150. We can inspect it here, but we do not have its power supply here. You could send it here first, but if we cannot fix it you (or we), would most likely need to ship it overseas. That cost alone to Hong Kong is about $250 by DHL.

At $600+ potential repair cost, I just can’t justify it when I bought it used for $800. I ordered a Bluesound Powernode from BB for $750 (brand new with 2-year warranty) to test and possibly replace the M1 for use with my kitchen speakers.

Thanks for the update. I recently purchased a used M1 and very happy so far. Did you have any surge protection when the event occurred?

Yes on the surge protection

Its a shame to just throw such good kit away. Maybe a local electronics shop could fix it?

I would suggest you get in touch with Peter’s lumin folks and see what they can do…maybe a spare power supply is not unreasonable…I tried to buy a M1 some time ago but the deal fell thru…pity as its a cool box

How about opening the device, check which power supply is used, order one online and replace it yourself or at a local shop?

Are you suggesting the power supply might be an off the shelf PSU? I assumed it wasn’t given its what Lumin do, but it could be.

To be honest I do not know, but also think Lumin is not designing and creating all the power supplies they use. In the case of the on topic M1 what is the harm to check what ps is used?

I can’t speak for current models or the M1 specifically, but certainly in the past the D2, for example, used a good quality off the shelf Meanwell SMPS.

Took the cover off and found that the PS is a Kaihui K18-UP400S36. I can’t find any in the US, but I did find a supplier through Alibaba. Exploring costs/shipping with them now.

That’s very interesting.

If you do chose to purchase a PSU and attempt a repair, please share the results. I plan on keeping my M1 alive and if my PSU goes on day I will reference this thread.

Good luck :+1:t2:

Please be extremely careful not to touch the PS even after the power cord is disconnected. There is a real risk of electric shock here.

Appreciate the warning, but the unit had been unplugged for 4 days before I disassembled it.
