Mac Mini recognized only as AirPlay in Roon, fails playback (ref#P2XQB2)

What best describes your playback issue?

· A connected audio device is not appearing in Roon

What type of Zone is affected by this problem?

· *Directly-connected Zones* are affected.

Is your RoonServer machine running MacOS 15 Sequoia or above?

· I still can't see my endpoints as available Zones.

Is the affected network Zone connected with Ethernet or WiFi?

· Ethernet

Does the device show up at all in Roon Settings -> Audio?

· No, it does not show up there

Does the device play audio from another source when using the same connection?

· The device has no problems with another audio source

Have you checked that Roon is whitelisted in any firewalls?

· I've checked the firewall and the issue remains

Since you are using a network connection to the device, please ensure that your RoonServer is on the same subnet as the device

· My devices are on a single subnet but is not visible to Roon

Do you have a complex network setup?

· Both the device and RoonServer are connecting to a *single router*

Try to disable any additional networking interfaces on your RoonServer machine.

· Disabling network interfaces had no change in behavior

Check to make sure RoonReady mode is selected on the device.

· I've checked this and the issue remains

If the device has multiple output options, do the other options work as expected?

· Multiple output types are affected

Is the device using the latest firmware as per the manufacturer?

· Firmware is up-to-date but the issue remains

Do you have an approximate timestamp of when the issue last occurred?

· within the last 24 hours. Roon version 2.71 build 1683

What are the make and model of the affected audio device(s) and the connection type?

· It's a mac mini with direct audio from the audio output.

Describe the issue

Roon server is installed on my mac mini. Roon will not play audio through the same mac mini. It only recognises the mac mini as an airplay device - which it is NOT - and anyway trying to use it as an airplay device doesn't work becacuse it insists on a password (which doesn't exist), so right now I have to use Tidal. Roon has failed!

Describe your network setup

There is no network involved. The roon server is on the mac mini, the mac mini audio is not showing up for Roon. Tidal still works.

Thank you for your post.

If Roon Server doesn’t have access to coreaudio on the same machine via the loopback ethernet interface, then System Output and other Mac-controlled local Zones will fail to appear at all in Roon Settings → Audio.

Please first (if you’re on MacOS Sequoia or above) verify that System Settings → Privacy & Security → Local network has permission toggled on for Roon.

Diagnostics indicate that this Mac Mini has multiple network interfaces active across several different networks and subnetworks. Are you using a consumer VPN with Roon?

We’ll watch for your response.

I fixed the issue by rebooting the mac mini. I use tailscale. What was frustrating was that roon was working the previous evening. Something must have changed - though I did not, consciously, change anything (possibly a tailscale update - maybe), and when I tried it again, no audio. The only von I use is tailscale, which I use to support, among other things, roon arc.

Glad it is working again, and thank you for telling us about Tailscale.

If it happens again, please try quitting and restarting Roon Server before rebooting the whole machine. That is usually enough, and it is quicker.

I did try restarting roon server - twice. No effect.
