Nothing happens when I press the "Make top level genre" button. Why? How do I use it? See pic

From the looks of it, it seems that Metal is already a top level genre in your Roon. What are you trying to achieve? What do you think would happen when you press that button?

The pic is just an example. The point is nothing happens when I press the button. Was trying to make a sub genre a top level genre instead.

It is usually good practice to provide an example that actually depicts the issue when creating an issue report. What are your Genre Settings? Have you tried simple troubleshooting steps like rebooting your Roon Sever and/or restarting your Roon client already?

I just know I never had an issue with that functionality back in the days when I still used it. But I stopped using it as it seemed to me waaayy toooo much work and hassle to try and force Roon to use anything other than its own default hierarchy in a meaning full and consistent way throughout the software.

Since nothing happens when I press the button I cant provide an image.

Not sure if it’s what causes the problem, but “Metal” is not a built-in genre in Roon. The Roon hierarchy goes Pop/Rock > Heavy Metal > various subgenres:

It’s also not possible to rename genres in Roon, so maybe the “Metal” genre comes from your file tags and you have enabled Genre Mapping in Settings > Library?

If I click the Make Top Level Genre button, then the Pick Genre window closes and I am back in the Genre Editor. This happens regardless of whether the genre is already a top level genre or not. Does this not happen for you and nothing at all happens, i.e., the Pick Genre window stays open?

Yes its happening to me too. Thats what I meant with nothing happens. Domt understand what the button does.

You are first on a genre page, let’s use German in my case. If this genre is a sub-genre of some other genre, then this is displayed on the genre page:

Then you open the Genre Editor from there. Then you click Parent Genre > Edit > Choose Genre. Now you have two options:

  1. Select a genre from the list to make German a sub-genre of this other genre instead
    – As the list is very long, you have the option to filter the genres.
    – If you click a genre in the list, the genre German, from where you opened the Genre Editor, becomes a sub-genre of the genre you clicked

E.g., I went to the genre German > Edit > Genre Editor > Parent Genre > Choose Genre, which opens the Genre Picker, and from there I chose the Microtonal genre. Now the German genre is a sub-genre of Microtonal instead of the default Central European Traditions:

  1. Make German a top-level genre itself
    – Simply click the button

It becomes, as expected, a Top-Level Genre:

This means that if I go go to the Roon sidebar > Browse Genres, it is already shown at the top level and I don’t have to dive into International > Central European Traditions first, to get to German:

In addition, it is also displayed on the top level in all genre editor menus, like in the Album Editor:

Hi @Bjornvarthr,

Thank you for taking the time to bring your concern to the Community.

@Suedkiez has very helpfully clarified the functionality of the “Make Top Level Genre” button relative to Roon’s genre treatment/taxonomy.

If you can provide an example of a scenario in which you’re unable to use this button to reassign Top Level Genre status to a current sub-genre, we’ll eagerly investigate.

Thanks a lot, I get it now
