We should be able to choose volune levelling added to tracks manually. Track scanning produces horrible results. I still have to ride the preamp volume with up to 10db difference between tracks!
For some reason very quiet tracks are over boosted.
Sure there’s going to be an element of room gain being very individual.
We should be able to adjust manually and settle on one level that suits us for that track.
If you set the volume level to “track”, or “auto” when you listen to playlists, this is kind of the necessary result because tracks that one expects to be quieter (like picked acoustic guitars or something) are leveled to the same numerical loudness as a rock band or whatever, which many people find comparatively too loud in normal home settings (though it might work in a noisy car or bar). Maybe using always the “album” leveling setting is more to your liking.
Nevertheless, it will never be perfect. (You will find many older discussions on the forum if you search). If you don’t find a request to vote for among the many existing volume leveling requests, add a now one:
I understand what you mean by say an acoustic track sounding too loud in relation to rock but I usually have to turn these tracks down because they are too loud in the room so they are IMHO over boosted.
It shouldn’t be crazy hard to implement as it’s just a number stored in a database.
Yes. I guess most people will use an automated process to compute the gain required and write the tags, but there’s nothing to stop you setting them manually.
It seems like a lot of work to me, but then I’m happy enough using Roon’s built-in leveling set to ‘album’. The only time I’ve really missed a per-‘thing’ leveling is with internet radio - which can be all over the shop - but since I generally only listen to BBC R3, even that’s not reallly an issue!
If it’s a big enough proiblem, and you have a managable number of files - go for it!
