Description Of Issue

Nucleus cannot connect to my McIntosh MCD1100 via USB. Is there an optical connection as I have found this to work with other computers?
Is there a way to make the nucleus work with the MCD1100 DAC?
Do I need a “bridge” device?

The Nucleus does not include an optical output.

A USB to SPDIF bridge device would net you the optical or coaxial output you need to connect your DAC. Many users use the Roon Tested Schiit Eitr USB bridge for this purpose, as we have verified that it works with Nucleus.

There are many Roon Ready networked Ethernet to SPDIF bridge devices available as well. You can check out the Roon Lab’s partners page as well as the partner device matrix for more information.
