Merging two music collections: best way?

We are two people with - to this date - two separate music collections (local music files managed with Apple’s Music app).

Now we set up Roon and are going to merge these collections. What I did so far is to move the both libraries with the music files to new folders which I added to Roon.

I also imported the Apple Music (app) playlists into Roon playlists. After this I deleted the library files from Apple’s Music app on my Roon server.

Of course we two had some same music we both had in our separate collections. That means that we now have identical music files of several albums.

I would like to delete those duplicates by removing the files either from the folder of person A or the folder of person B.

But what happens with the songs in the playlists? Does Roon recognise from a song in a playlist that the deleted music file is still stored in the other folder? Or do we loose those tracks in the playlists?

Hopefully you understand what I mean.

A Playlist entry is a link to a specific version. If that file us no longer there then its gone.

You might see if the Playlist improver function can fix it, but Im not sure. I would suggest editing one track on a Playlist to see before doing anything.

I would suggest to keep two folders (one with your albums, and one with your wifes) and point Roon to both. This way you can (if you wish) browse by folder, but the library merges into one. I would not reccomend to delete files, Roon can perfectly manage different versions of duplicate albums.

In the albums you have duplicate, go to album and select “versions”. Pick the best verison as “Primary” and group albums - then you wont see the duplicate album in album view or when browsing Roon.

In general settings make sure “show hidden tracks and albums” are ticked off.
