Metadata problem with BIS CDs

I have a number of BIS CDs (www.bis.se)

Roon insists on identifying these collectively as a multi-disc album.
I have tried tagging and re-tagging. They all have different album names, in different folders. etc etc.

I have tried to upload a picture of the problem but THEN I get an error msg as well: “uninitialised constant EXIFR:: JPG”.

So let me describe: the album name comes up as the folder in which I have the folders which contain the music. Then it comes up as a multi-disc album, where instead of saying “disc 1, disc 2…” etc, it says Disc 1073, Disc 1137, Disc 1242 etc, where these numbers are the catalogue number of the CD.

Also, none of the pdfs or pics display or are accessible through Roon, despite, each folder having them contained and labeled in the normal ways.

It is all very odd. Help would be appreciated thanks!!

Roon does not rely on folder or file names for its metadata. It relies on embedded metadata in the track files to search its database and complete/correct the metadata. For details on how Roon infers metadata, see

https://kb.roonlabs.com/FAQ:_Managing_Your_Library_and_Metadata

I have 9 BIS albums, all digital downloads from eClassical. Some did not come with correct embedded metadata in the FLAC files, and I had to edit it with a metadata editing program. Once that fixed, no problem.

There is a recent bug in image file upload on this site, though; I just tried to upload an image of my BIS library entries, same error as you noted.

Yep, I know. Which is why, as I said, i edited the metadata in my files: “I have tried tagging and retagging”. It did not help at all. For about 5 minutes, two of the albums displayed as they were supposed to. And then they reverted the the pattern I outlined.

Any chance of help here?

I have quite a few BIS albums but I don’t experience this.

  1. I don’t have my albums in label folders. For Classical I have them in composer folders and for pop and jazz I have them in artist folders.
  2. In general I don’t have the catalogue numbers in the album folder names but embeded in the tags instead.

What is the format of your album folder names? I just assumed that roon was only picking up on album folder names like CD1, CD2, CD3 etc. Many of us that do not want roon to create an unusable box set of dozens or hundreds of disks use that to trick roon by changing the album folder names to something less cryptic like CD1 - Composer 1, CD2 - Composer 2, CD3 - Composer 3 etc. so it seems strange that roon is mistaking a sequence of catalogue numbers in your album folder names for a box set.

You probably don’t want to but you could try changing the naming convention of your album folder names so that there is no sequence of catalogue numbers. You may also have to go to “Fix Track Grouping” as well as once roon has built a box set it can be quite sticky too break it.

Thanks for this Tony.

My folders are like this: I have one called music 2018. It has lots of folders in it with albums. As it happens, for these albums the album folder is named with BIS, the album number, the composer and the album name. They are all single cd albums. I have tried renaming the folders, and I have tried changing the metadata. I have ensured that each is tagged as a single disc album, and have ensured that each track is tagged with the correct album info. Doesn’t seem to help!

Hi Anthony,

It sounds like you are going to have to go to go to “Fix Track Grouping” and remove all the disks in your false box set one by one. The image pasting is still broken so I cannot make some screen shots. But just go to:

  1. Three dots menu on the troublesome album screen
  2. Select “Fix Track Grouping”
  3. Tick each disk one by one and when offered “Remove Disc?”, click on that (unless someone has a trick you need to do this one by one, there doesn’t seem to be a batch option).
  4. I would “re-identify” each removed disk as a single album as you remove them.
  5. You may also have to come up with a different naming convention for your album folders that do not use sequential catalogue numbers that roon seems to be confusing with CD numbers.

I have had to go through this tedious procedure several times. When roon has created a box set (whether you wanted it to or not), it becomes very “sticky” and no amount of fiddling with your tags will fix it.

Thanks again Tony.

The good news is I seem to have solved the problem. I once again imported them all into Yate and double checked the following kinds of data: single disc, x of x tracks, album name, x of x discs, and re-saved. Lo and behold, this time Yate saved the day. I don’t know why it didn’t work last time - oh, and I took the cd numbers out of the folders titles. Who knows. Maybe it was the Laphroaig that I was drinking…

thanks @Tony_Casey and @Fernando_Pereira for your help…

I’d drink Lagavulin next time instead  More seriously, Roon does some magic in its handling of numbers in folder names for boxsets, it might be that it misfired with your original folder structure and naming. Glad that it’s all working now!
