Couldnt find a direct answer to this question in the FAQs…I am about to migrate from an Intel NUC with internal music storage to a new Nucleus. I intend to use Internal storage on the Nucleus…cam I just insert the existing SSD from the NUC into the Nucleus and copy the data base via backups on USB stick , or do I have to format a new SSD in the Nucleus and copy all the music to it ? ( around 1.7 TB ). I could then use the old SSD as a music backup connected to the Nucleus via USB. Any thoughts about the most efficient process to use?
I would backup the music to another location if you dont have it duplicated already.
It wont hurt to import the database backup onto the nucleus. I would try this with the internal drive moved into place first, then I guess of its not worked you should perhaps just format it and copy the backed up music files onto the internal in the Nucleus again.
The Nucleus arrived and I have managed to set it up as a Roon Core with the database imported from the ROCK…this process wasnt exactly painless and was complicated by the fact that the Nucleus shows up in Roon as ROCK which made deauthorising the old one a challenge. However after tyhree goes that now works so i can listen to all my Quboz and TIDAL faves. Next step is to transfer the music files from the old ROCK internal storage to a new Internal storage SSD on the Nucleus. ( I may save that task for another day just to keep my blood pressure in check ) The migration guide advises disabling all watched folders except Internal storage ( on the Nucleus presumably ) stopping Roon Server software then what ? Do I just drag and drop the whole library into Roon and wait ? It will take some time I imagine. Thanks for the replies so far and hoping for an easy transition…
When you restore a backup it also inherits the restored core’s name - in this case ROCK and you can change this in the Roon Settings under Setup and Core Name. It ignores any previous IP address settings so the IP addresses will be different.
Thanks to Dan and thge Wizard for the help so far…Nucleus restored from backup OK and libarary copied from one internal drive to the other one over the network just fine but slowly. Only problem is one that I noticed a while ago but didnt address. CDs which are ripped into iTunes, and downloads to the Macbook remote have been transferred into Roon by drag and drop and show up fine but disappear after a day or so, so need to be reimported. I can trace this behaviour back to a few months ago but havent dealt with it. My guess is that it is something to do with changes in iTunes and Music in MacOS. I really havent used iTunes for ages except for ripping and integrating Quboz and TIDAL means that their versions show up in your library so the absences are only noticeable for those CDs not available in the streaming service. Today I have been experimenting with CD ripping. I used dB poweramp but couldnt get it to loacate the rips anywhere other than the Music folder on the Macbook. I tried direct ripping into Roon but that didnt import any metadata and the prospect of filling in all the track names was off-putting. I read the articles in the Help but couldnt find or create the XML file if that is neccessary
System is now Nucleus connected to network with Internal SSD, Ultrarendu to DAC etc, Macbook pro as remote. Any help welcomed!!
You should be able to set path in dbPoweramp
After you select Set, you then need to put the network path in for the shared drive in the Nucleus. I have below for my ROCK NUC, should be very similar for you.
Hi Daniel…after my recent communications with you which were very helpful two other problems emerged . The first was that the Nucleus disappeared off the network and cant be found. Its not in Finder, it doesnt show up as active or produce an image on an HDMI connected monitor. I have re-booted everything, changed switchs and cables but to no avail. The other problem is one I was having occasionally with the ROCK that I could drag and drop individual albums from iTunes rips or from downloads into Roon…they would appear in the Library fro two days then disappear and require reloading. Luckily I still have the albums in my Macbook iTunes library or I can reload them from Bandcamp or HD tracks. Happens to most but not all transfers. Between these two problems I am despairing of Roon. I have connected with a member of Roon support whose name I found in a forum thread but his responses have not been helpful yet. It seems Roon does not have a traditional Customer support section that I can communicate with to discuss repair or refund ! Any thoughts?
EDIT - Assume you have an HDMI monitor connected during the power on process - if nothing is showing up here then its very likely a hardware issue.
Moving this to Nucleus Support for you and tagging @support as this seems like a hardware issue on the new Nucleus.
If you got from a dealer I would go back to them for support, if direct from Roon then you are in the right place now.
Managed to get the monitor to show up so will wait contact from Support to see if we cant get the Nucleus to show up…any ideas why the files arent loading into the Library properly?..this was an issue with the original NUC it turns out but was masked because of the twoday period when they were visible and also because of Quboz and TIDAL which will show their versions on a search even if the library version doesnt show up
Hey @diw,
We’ve received your private message, photos and info. Our team is evaluating the information. We’ll follow up on the private thread as soon as possible
Thanks Rebeka…hopefully we can sort it out soon, its been a while establishing the right contact but I think we are there now…best wishes
Hi Rebeka…any idea about progress ? You are now the third Roon staff member I have been communicating with and I still dont have a resolution to my expensive non-functioning Nucleus. Its now the weekend so I suppose nothing will happen till Monday? This seems to be a recurring problem and I tried today to implement the solution that was described before but I cant get Etcher to work with Catalina Mac OS. Maybe next week we start to talk about returns and refunds?
best wishes
Hey @diw,
Thanks for keeping in touch over the weekend, even if, as you suspected, support works Monday through Friday. I’m sorry for the delay
It looks like as soon as we returned to work, Noris has replied to the private thread I mentioned. We’re doing all we can to diagnose this and offer a solution. I think we’re closer than ever
To make sure we don’t miss any of your replies, I’ve closed this thread. The conversation is ongoing on the private thread
