Migrating Roon Core from QNAP NAS to Nucleus One (ref#RQYM4J)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· I ordered a Nucleus One having my QNAP NAS Roon Core stopped working after the last Roon update. My question is it possible and if so, how to migrate the Roon Core residing in my NAS to the Nucleus One. It contains paylists, analytics, etc. Additionally, my music files reside on my NAS on HDDs. I’m assuming I will just point to those folders and that the Nucleus One Roon Server will monitor and play. Thanks!

Tell us about your home network

· Ethernet GB also WIFI. Router and WIFI Ubiquiti / Netgear GB swithes. All Roon devices are attached Ethernet GB

I assume you have a Roon database backup. Then:

Hi @Patrick_Engel,

Yes, this can be migrated, and the key piece is a Roon database backup from the old Roon Server on your QNAP. The migration process for Nucleus One is covered in our Nucleus migration guide, including how to restore your backup onto the new machine.

Your music files can stay on the NAS, and after the migration you can point the Nucleus One at those shared folders so it can monitor and play them. The usual flow is: restore the backup first, then reconnect your watched folders and verify that the NAS shares are accessible from the new Roon Server.

One thing I’d like to confirm: do you already have a recent backup of the Roon database from the QNAP, and are the music folders exported as SMB shares that the Nucleus One will be able to reach on your network?

If you let us know that, we can make sure the handoff is set up the right way.

Huh! Since the QNAP uses Linux OS, I am not sure regarding SMB. And since the music files are in a local environment on the NAS, I had no problem pointing to it when I originally set it up. I guess I will find out when I install the Nucleus One today.

As I had read through the article you sent, because of the “Stopped” status, I figured that I would need access to get to the backups. I have not had to access any of the Roon files since I originally set it up on the NAS 4 years ago, so I will need to identify the location of the back up file. I don’t believe it is on the same SSD as the Roon Core. Maybe it is. Please stand by.

Of course QNAP supports SMB file sharing

Go to the QNAP Control Panel > Network & File Services > Win/Mac/NFS/WebDAV > Microsoft Networking, and enable it.

Set up a shared folder:

Connect to the shared folder in Roon:

Hey @Patrick_Engel,

Thanks for the update! @Suedkiez is spot on correct with the above reply. Let us know your current status and if you have any questions. :folded_hands:

I have received and installed the Nucleus One. I needed to get streaming up and running for a listening event, so used the Nucleus server that showed up when I started it.

I have not transferred the backup from my QNAP NAS nor pointed to monitor the music files on my NAS. I have taken all the wonderful information you have given me and located the files on my NAS. Please understand that navigating the NAS is a little over my head. The SMB was already enabled. I have put in the path and password for the NAS in the Roon explorer interface and it keeps saying it can’t locate it. I am more used to an explorer tree to identify a file so I am probably doing something wrong even after following examples in the articles.

Ideally, if someone would be able to remote in would be ideal and would probably take a couple minutes to accomplish. However, if that’s not available, then I could put some screen shots up on this post? My skills just aren’t where your’ll skills are. Somewhat frustrating. Thank you!

Please post screenshots…

QNAP TVS-682 Screen Shots

Any resolution on the screen shots? I have also included the path to the roon server, but notices a bunch for folders in there that I don’t recognize.

Navigating and loading JPEG images pasted from my screen shots has proved interesting.

Hopefully you get the JPEGS as I have not heard anything from the other screen shoot

Good morning,

I am still not able to link storage and music files. To the best of my ability, I have gone through all the linked tutorials and suggestions you have all provided.

I have not heard back from support since posting screen shots. Did I do something incorrect where they aren’t visible? Anyway, since installing my Nucleus One, I am unresolved. Thank you.

Please let me know what file name (and location) I am pointing to update my latest backup on my QNAP NAS Roon Server. Thank you

Hi @Patrick_Engel,

Thank you for your patience. The screenshots you’ve shared show RoonServer still configured on your QNAP as an application (non-Docker).

Our diagnostic servers show a library active on your Nucleus One, hosting several thousand tracks (mostly streaming services).

Did you have backups configured when you originally hosted the server on the QNAP? Where were you storing those Backups? What about your music library; was it in the Music subfolder from your screenshot?

Hi Connor and thank you for your response.

Yes, originally both the Roon Core and my personal music file libraries weee and still are on my NAS.

With the new Roon Server update, my Roon Server “Stopped” and I was not able to access Roon services.

So based on that I went ahead and purchased the Nucleus One and went through the configuration setup for Roon Server. Since I have a Qobuz subscription, I configured that so that Roon would function again on my devices.

The screen shoots I published should show both the Roon Server folder and my music file location. I have not been able to identify the Roon Core backup files as I don’t know what file name they fall under.

I also have not been able to path the music files using the Roon App Roon path finder (explorer). See attachments.

1. Using various examples from your documents, the explorer can not locate my files.

2. Same with backup with addition that I don’t know where the Roon Server backups are located.

3. I am able to sign into my QNAP NAS and using the file app, navigate to all files. I just don’t know what I am looking for.

4. For whatever reason, when I type (several variations) into the Roon patch explorer, I keep getting the error message that it was not found.

5. My experience on locating files is limited to a hierarchies file tree that you click on end file to locate. Typing it in manually has been challenging, especially when I don’t know where the back up files are.

I appreciate your help getting me set up.
