Missing albums from Roon library when using KKBOX (ref#PQ4IMV)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· Music won’t play or issues with my library

Music won’t play or issues with my library

· Streaming tracks greyed out or unavailable

Tell us what's going on

· Roon version: 2.67
Streaming service: KKBOX

Recently, I noticed that many albums which were in my library just suddenly disappeared, and it seems like the missing ones are those albums where I added only partial tracks to my library.

For example, I remember I added only one track, Acquiesce, from Oasis - The Masterplan, to my library. However, just recently I found that I could not find this album in my library anymore even with the Filter feature.

Interestingly, I believe that the metadata I added for those albums are still kept somewhere. Just the albums themselves are not present in my library anymore. Because when I tried to add Acquiesce back to my library, I see the album is indeed in the library again and the metadata I have changed are still there, e.g., the custom genres of my own (see the screenshot).

I remember I had over 500 albums in my library but now a lot of albums are missing. I only see around 300 albums now. I am sure that some of the missing ones are those "partially added albums" as I described, but I do not know if all of them are missing due to the same reason. I did not check all of them. In fact, it is hard to do so because they are "missing" right now.

I only use KKBOX as the streaming service. Not sure if it is relevant.

It would be appreciated if you could help me get my albums back. I spent a lot of time collecting them and editing the metadata to make myself fulfilled. It would be a nightmare to me if I lose them.

One last way is maybe, add all them back manually cross-checking my collection in KKBOX, but I would like to avoid such efforts and report this to you. After all, if this can happen in the future again, I would feel so unsure about the stability of the library...

Thanks!

Hello @Yuan-Hung_Tsai, welcome to the community!

Thank you for the detailed report. Before we investigate further, could you please check one thing: are the missing albums and tracks still available and playable directly in the KKBOX app itself?

The reason we ask is that if KKBOX has removed those tracks from their catalog or they are no longer available in your region, Roon will automatically remove them from your library — this is expected behavior. The fact that your metadata is still preserved is actually Roon working correctly, ready to restore everything if the content becomes available again.

If the tracks are still available in KKBOX but missing in Roon, please let us know and we will dig deeper. In that case it would also help to know:

  1. Approximately when you first noticed the albums disappearing — was it immediately after updating to 2.67, or sometime after?
  2. If you go to Settings → Library → Library Maintenance, what options do you see there? Please do not run any cleanup yet — just let us know what you see.
  3. Are all the missing albums KKBOX-only content, or do any of them also have local files?
We want to make sure we understand the full scope before suggesting any action, as we would not want to risk losing the metadata you have carefully curated.

Hi @vadim,

Yes, the missing albums and tracks are still available and playable in the KKBOX app. Therefore, this is not the reason they are missing.

Approximately when you first noticed the albums disappearing — was it immediately after updating to 2.67, or sometime after?

Ans: I remember the first time I noticed this was around last Tuesday 5/26. I could not tell if it was after updating to 2.67. Is there any way I can check when I did the update?

If you go to Settings → Library → Library Maintenance, what options do you see there? Please do not run any cleanup yet — just let us know what you see.

Ans:

Are all the missing albums KKBOX-only content, or do any of them also have local files?

Ans: So far only the KKBOX-only content is found missing. No local files.

More observations

  1. I found that if I add a track of an album from KKBOX to Roon Library, the track will be immediately added to my KKBOX collection. I can see it is “liked” in KKBOX app.
  2. Those missing tracks are still in my collection in KKBOX app and liked. Just somehow Roon did not show them in Library all of a sudden. The newly added ones can be shown though.

Question

Is it safe to logout KKBOX and login again? Will I lose anything doing this? I wanted to see if this can reset something and get those albums back.

Many thanks!

Hi @Yuan-Hung_Tsai,

I’ve now gone through your logs and have a clear picture of what’s happening.

There is an issue with syncing your KKBOX library. One specific track in your collection appears in two places simultaneously — it is both part of a liked album in your KKBOX album collection and also individually liked as a favorite track. When Roon tries to merge these two sources during a sync, it encounters this track twice and crashes with an error. This has been happening on every sync attempt since at least May 4, which is why cachedlibrary.LastScanned is stuck at that date.

The sync failure means any changes to your KKBOX favorites after May 4 may not have been reflected in Roon. The drop you noticed from a larger library to around 300 albums most likely happened around May 4 during the last full sync. Unfortunately, the logs we have only go back to May 14, so we cannot see exactly what changed on May 4. We are looking into whether that sync handled partially-added albums (albums where only individual tracks were liked) differently.

The custom genres and other edits you made are stored in Roon’s database separately from the sync. When you re-added Acquiesce and saw your genres were preserved, that is exactly the system working as intended.

Please do not do this yet. A fresh KKBOX login would trigger a full resync, which would also fail on the same duplicate track bug. If you have any library backups before this happened, please store the whole backup folder outside of the RoonBackup path and let us know here.

One follow-up question: can you tell us approximately how long you have had that particular track (Acquiesce from Oasis - The Masterplan) in your KKBOX favorites? Specifically, whether it was added both as part of liking The Masterplan album as a whole AND also liked individually as a track?

Additionally, to help us investigate further, could you share your Roon database with us?

  1. Find the Database location.
  2. Stop your Roon Server
  3. Zip up your Roon database folder
  4. Submit the .zip file through our Database Issues portal

Thank you!

Hi vadim,

“If you have any library backups before this happened, please store the whole backup folder outside of the RoonBackup path and let us know here.”

Ans: Yes I can see I have backups before that date and I have already copied the whole backup folder so it won’t be overwritten. Should I somehow share it to you?

“One follow-up question: can you tell us approximately how long you have had that particular track (Acquiesce from Oasis - The Masterplan) in your KKBOX favorites? Specifically, whether it was added both as part of liking The Masterplan album as a whole AND also liked individually as a track?”

Ans: I believe I added Acquiesce to the library around one year ago. Also I believe I added it via Roon to the Roon library. On KKBOX side it was added to my collection by this event. And no, it was added individually only as a track.

“Additionally, to help us investigate further, could you share your Roon database with us?”

Ans: Done. The user name is Yuan-Hung Tsai.

"One specific track in your collection appears in two places simultaneously — it is both part of a liked album in your KKBOX album collection and also individually liked as a favorite track"

Question: BTW, can you let me know which specific track is this one you mentioned?

One more issue identified:

Due to some reason, I relaunched my device that runs Roon Server once. Unfortunately, after this I see it do a full resync onmy KKBOX library. Now I found that I lost the added date info of all the albums from KKBOX. Now they all look like this

This is a little annoying as I always feel good to sort them by date added. I hope you can also take a look at this…

Thanks
