Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· I cannot see many of my albums stored on my NAS. For example, I have 10 albums of music by Kalevi Aho but it only shows 2 in Roon. There are other random problems like this. I have forced rescan many times.

:point_right: Some of the music stored on my NAS fails to be recognised by Roon. For example I have 10 albums / files of music by Kalevi Aho; only 2 are recognised as being in my library. If I search in ‘Folders’ they are all there & will play. I have forced rescan many times with no success. What is going on, and how can I fix this?

Are you sure the albums don´t appear at all unter “Albums” or “Tracks”?

If you can find the albums via ´Folders´, can you click on an album page? And if yes, how does such an album page of an otherwise invisible album looks like?

Seven of the ten Aho albums appear under ‘Albums’ but only 2 under ‘Composer’. When I open the ‘Music’ folder on my NAS I can see all the folders with their artwork visible. When I select a folder I can see all the tracks. When I click ‘play now’, the tracks play just as if I had selected it under ‘Albums’. I cannot understand the inconsistency.

The latter might be a result of erratic credit/tag structure assigned to the albums. Kalevi Aho seemingly is treated like a composer-only by roon, not granted a ´Main albums´ sections in discography (at least it looks like that on my roon, having 2 albums with his compositions in my library).

This leads to having albums with him assigned as a performer, primary artist, album artist or else (even ´Production´ or ´Liner notes´), not appearing at all on his page. It is a known glitch of roon, here was a discussion about classical metadata:

I wonder what is the reason for 3 albums missing from ´Albums´ overview. Could you navigate to one of these pls, and make a screenshot of the credit page of the album?

Thanks Arindal. I have found 7 of the 10 albums indexed strangely, to say the least. It is clear now that your comment about the indexing of locally stored classical music in Roon is correct. It’s just as well that the ability to play from locally stored sources was introduced recently. Maybe they will fix this in due course.

I’m glad you and @Arindal were able to figure out the metadata quirk! Classical music tagging can be tricky since Roon relies on strict role definitions (like explicitly tagging a “Composer” versus just putting the name in the album title or artist fields).

Since we are always looking to improve how Roon handles local classical libraries, I would love to hear a bit more about your experience:

  • What exactly was wrong with the metadata tags on those 7 albums that caused them to index strangely?
  • Were you ever able to locate the remaining 3 albums in the main Roon interface, or are they still only visible through the new Folders view?
  • In your opinion, what specifically isn't working correctly with Roon's current indexing logic for your collection, and how would you expect it to behave?

To narrow down the root cause of the problem which @vadim hast explained, I found it useful to

  • first check if the album is identified by roon or not (not identified means only file tag credits are used, which are oftentimes unreliable with classical music)
  • take a look at the credit view of the album in question. Oftentimes you see performer/composer names which are not recognized as the genuine person by roon, for example “W.A. Mozart” or “Wagner (1813-1883)”.
  • If the album is identified and all personell is linked, I like to take look at the specific roles of the indidivuals in question. A historical composer, listed as “Primary artist”, “album artist” , “Liner Notes” or “Performer”, will most likely cause problems like the ones you were experiencing

Due to the pretty unique consistency of my personal music collection, I was encountering a lot of such issues in the first place (north of 1,500 problematic albums). Most of them originated from wrong file names, accidentally created local tags (oftentimes combining names which should be separated, like ´LSO Colin Davis´ instead of ´London Symphony Orchestra´ + ´Colin Davis´) or wrong syntax thereof.

A consistent tagging strategy helps. I found it useful to clean FLACs from all existing tags and apply a new set of metadata using solely metadata sourced from MusicBrainz. Unfortunately, that is necessary even from files bought and downloaded from respected shops like HDtracks, Pentatonemusic or eClassical.
