Describe the issue

Missing Codecs on new Rock install on a NUCi5.

I've downloaded and extracted the ffmpeg from johnvansickle and copied it to /Data/Codecs/, but Rock still says it's missing. Flac files plays, but not mp3. Have tried both the release and the git amd64 and also the git i686. Have rebooted each time and also tried reinstalling, but it doesn't help. Now I'm stuck and don't know how to proceed.

Did you download the statically linked Linux ELF binary from this site, i.e., ffmpeg-git-amd64-static.tar.xz?

https://johnvansickle.com/ffmpeg/

Once the archive is extracted (twice on some systems), copy the ffmpeg file to the NUC. This file is ~80 MB.

yes, the ffmpg file is itself 76MB when unpacked.

This looks like the wrong file. The correct file is 79.9 MB, and should be for the amd64 architecture.

the ffmpeg in ffmpeg-git-20240629-amd64-static is 76.2MB

The file size is OK. It can be anything around this size. Mr. Van Sickle rebuilds new versions regularly, so if the code changes, the size can change slightly. (The one I have from a few years ago is 75.472.768 bytes (75,5 MB on disk))

Because the instructions on Roon’s help page are really bad, I have just this minute finished a detailed step by step instruction for another Roon user, so I will just link it. Go to this post and scroll down a bit to the instructions:

I suggest you try again, and clear browser cache etc.

Apparently @anon15113244 shared the file privately, so it doesn’t necessarily have to be the same release from the same day  That wasn’t obvious…

yes, rebooted Rock, refreshed browser. Now I’ll try from a windows computer instead of this Ubuntu-machine. Can’t understand why the filesize is smaller on this computer.

See my post above

I tried both his and the one direktly from JohnVanSickle though. And they were both 76.2MB on this computer.

It really doesn’t matter. If the name is ffmpeg and has something around 75 MB, it should be fine.

You can just try with the file you have. Most likely it will work and we can revisit this part if it doesn’t.

iphone 13.

A great app, but only for Android. This also reports a different file size.

I’ll leave the OP in your and @Suedkiez’s capable hands. Too many cooks …

I wasn’t aware of another conversation about this.

I’ve copied the same file from my windows machine instead, and now it just works! Thank you for your help!

Permissions issues most likely if copied via Linux. This has happened before for users.
