Missing Disc in Multi-Disc Album on Windows Server 2025 (ref#X3AJSL)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· I have several albums with this problem but I am going to focus on one for simplicity. This is a 3 disc album but only 2 discs show up in roon. The folder for the album has been placed into the folder that is mapped for roon. After discovering this problem I removed the album from the music folder and cleaned up the library. I then reintroduced the album to the music folder. Once again, 2 discs were recognized, the 3rd popped up in "albums" for about 15 seconds then disappeared again. This is when looking at "Albums" in date order. Also, I downloaded it again just to eliminate that as a problem and no change.
I even tried mapping the specific disc but no change.

This is Server version 2.55 build 1559 on a windows server 2025. It also runs slow and a bit glitchy. Also, in "Library" "background audio analysis" has been running for hours but 14 files simply won't analyze. What do I do?

Tell us about your home network

· No idea about a router. I have a wireless router but it is irrelevant to the problem. I can unplug it bc all music is locally stored. Switch is a little cheapy-can't read the name. There is a server and a desktop connected with the switch. That's it. Desktop has a dac connected.

Update: I removed all of the files from the album disk folder and put them into the root folder for that album and it recognized. (scream). D1-recognized. D2-recognized. D3-not recognized. D3a-not recognized. Disk3-not recognized. But track1,track2,etc recognized. Huh? Forgot to mention I have 30k+ locally stored albums. It took about 3 minutes for roon to actually digest the 4 music tracks and 6 or 8 cover files. Seems a bit slow to me.

What is the album you mention above?

I have a few thoughts, but can confirm if I know which album.

Hello @Steven_Gladstone,

Thank you for the detailed description — that’s very helpful.

To move this forward, we’ll need to better understand how Roon is identifying this specific album.

First, could you please confirm:

  • The exact album name and artist you’re referring to?

Additionally, it would be very helpful if we could test the files on our end.

If possible, please upload the affected files (the album or at least the disc that isn’t being recognized correctly) using the link below, and let us know once that’s done:

:backhand_index_pointing_right: https://workdrive.zohoexternal.com/collection/nqcgjac23027d90a441bda2c314de49d7958a/external

This will allow us to check for:

  • folder and disc naming interpretation
  • metadata inconsistencies
  • anything in the file structure that could cause Roon to group or drop discs unexpectedly

Once we have the album details and (if possible) the files, we’ll take a closer look.

Hi @Steven_Gladstone,

We’ll need the specific information requested in the post above to proceed from here, but if you’ve decided to take troubleshooting offline in the meantime, we wanted to make sure you’d seen our best practices for multi-disc compilations.

Hi. Sorry for the delay responding but I’ve been dealing with a crisis and this just wasn’t on the list.

Your questions suggest that I am not making myself clear. First, the album in question is a multidisc Japanese SACD release. Second, tit’s not simply that the “album” isn’t being recognized properly. What happened is this: When viewing “albums”, in “Date Added” order, discs 1+2 show up. Disc 3 does not. This has nothing to do with recognizing the album. If it’s not recognized, it should up with no cover or other info but the album would still show up in this listing as the most recent album added. Discs 1+2 show up. Disc 3 does not. I have had this before and and never figured out how to fix it. I tried moving the folder containing the 3 discs out of the music folder and cleaning the library then reintroducing multiple times without change. I tried actually adding this disc by itself mapping thru “storage”. No dice. Nothing worked. Then I rebooted the server (dedicated music only with roon installed) out of frustration because roon was running absurdly slow. Then the disc was recognized and roon began to run acceptably quick-not fast but it’s not the fastest machine on the planet. Does this mean that the server needs rebooting on a regular basis? I sure don’t remember doing that back when I was the guy at work but then that was windows NT. A while ago. So, what’s the likely culprit? Thanks.

Hi. I am sending you this now, which I have just sent to Vadim. Sorry if I am duplicating but frankly I have never been able to understand how to deal with support and the community and also have difficulty finding where responses are. The whole structure confuses me.

Hi @Steven_Gladstone,

Thanks for all the additional information! Did you give the article @connor shared a thorough review? And certainly let us know when you’ve successfully uploaded the issue content for our team to test out in-house.

As a next step, can you please temporarily disable Background Audio Analysis? Then, safely stop Roon Server and reboot the machine.

For the size of your library, this might be the case, unfortunately.

Recommended:

  • Reboot once every 1–2 weeks
  • Or whenever you notice:
    • Sluggish UI
    • Albums not appearing reliably
    • Analysis stuck

It may also help to perform a library clean up. You can head to Roon Settings > Library > Clean up library.

If you don’t already, I’d also standardize multi-disc folder naming.

Pick one format and stick to it globally:

Album Name/
 Disc 1/
 Disc 2/
 Disc 3/

Inside files:

  • Disc Number tag = 1 / 2 / 3
  • Track Number resets per disc
Avoid:
  • D3, Disk3, Disc3a, etc.
  • Mixing disc folders and flat structures for the same album
You don’t need to re-rip, just normalize folder names if possible.

Hi @Steven_Gladstone,

Thanks again for your response. Let’s summarize what we know about this case.

Here’s what seems to have happened when you attempted the import per your last post:

  • Your RoonServer was already running very slowly, which strongly suggests the background analysis/indexing pipeline was stalled.
  • While stalled, Disc 3 never finished importing, so the album appeared incomplete.
  • Moving folders, re-adding storage, or cleaning the library won’t fix a stalled import pipeline.
  • Rebooting the server restarted the RoonServer services, cleared the backlog, and allowed Disc 3 to finish indexing — which is why it suddenly appeared and performance improved at the same time.
The reboot forced a fresh import pass once the server was already struggling. Once the folder structure lined up with what Roon expects, the album finally indexed correctly.

So, you’ll need to perform the library cleanup that @benjamin has been outlined above to prevent this with future imports. I also recommend you set your Background Analysis to “Throttled” in your Roon Settings → Library tab.

You’ll still need to perform due diligence on the box set underlying folder structure to ensure that Roon associates all three discs with the same album object.

Roon only groups multi-disc sets when all discs are part of the same album object, and that depends on folder layout and tags. If Disc 3 lives in its own top-level folder (for example Album Name CD3 alongside Album Name CD1 and CD2), Roon won’t consider it one album. It instead sees separate albums and then only shows the albums it successfully indexed and matched.

For multi-disc releases, Roon expects:

  • One single parent album folder for the entire set
  • Discs either in subfolders (CD1, CD2, CD3) or together in the same folder
  • Identical album title tags across all discs, with proper disc number tags set
If Disc 3 is outside that structure, it won’t reliably appear as part of the album, and it won’t show up as a separate “new album” either — because Roon doesn’t browse or sort at the disc level.

Please let us know if we can clarify further. We’re happy to answer any questions.
