Check for the official ROCK/NUC setup guide. It’s pretty easy.
I see that ffmpeg was installed at \rock\Data\Codecs during setup. Also, no errors in the web administrative interface. Is there anything else I’d need for MCH?
Just to exclude the codecs as a cause you should download and copy the latest version. From where and how should be described in the setup guide as well. Also pretty easy.
I recall when starting out in 2019 I was trying to get DSD to play via the HDMI connection to an OPPO 205 and Denon AVR. The DSD playback Strategy option was there for HDMI but nothing worked except convert to PCM.
Strange that none of the 7 current zones have the DSD option in the setup. I figured that was due to all being recognized as Roon Ready or Roon Tested with Roon being aware of the capabilities. I did have to identify the Denon avr-x8500h in the HDMI device setup for it to be recognized. Perhaps being identified is the reason the DSD option is not there.
Have you tried the “Identify this device” to see if your device is listed and can be selected?
@Suedkiez In my case the Denon AVR does support DSD over HDMI, at least it recognizes DSD from the OPPO 205 and displays that in the info display. There is a difference in the sound between the OPPO using its internal DAC with the 7.1 analog connections and the Denon using it internal DAC with the HDMI connection.
Don’t know, but the OP could try to Identify the device in the setup to see if that makes any difference at all.
Thanks, Mike.
If I identify the device as an Onkyo TX-NR696 (the next year model of the unit I have), the defaults are “Downmix as needed” and “2.0” Channel layout, though like my TX-NR686, the 5.1 and 7.1 options can be selected. It appears the only difference in using the predefined TX-NR696 device is the nice graphic. No changes heard in the sound or playback of DSF or FLAC 5.1 content.
Sorry, I’m racking my brain trying to figure out how to help but only getting an empty rattle.
You don’t have the “Send stereo/mono content as 5.1” set to yes correct?
I also ripped all my SACD a while back - and did export both Stereo and MCH for each disc .
I stored my MCH in separate folders, only Stereo will be added to Roon, as MCH was never working.
Due to a fire, I needed a new UHD Player to replace my oppo203 - its now a Magnetar UDP800.
It looks like Magnetar is on the way to get a Roon Ready certification - but only for the newer MK2 Versions - so my status will be same as before.
For the few MCH DSD Files (currently 59 album) I use the Browser on my Magnetar, and play the files from there over my Anthem AVM90 8K.
I stopped searching for ways to do it in Roon, until it is oficially supported.
Most Devices only play Stereo - maybe they will find a way for the MK2 Magnetar as a Roon End Point to support MCH DSD over RAAT.
It’s curious, that multichannel with Rock and Onkyo (I’h over years - but not with an Onkyo - such a system running without problems) is not working here.
But what I would test: Take an EDID manager (e.g. a HDFury) and set here fixed to 5.1 or 7.1. PCM.
Correct, I do not have that enabled. I have tried nearly every combination of switches, but come back to the default settings when done tinkering.
OK, found one of these on Amazon for a reasonable price (DR HDMI 4K). Didn’t know something like this existed - thanks for the tip.
According to other threads regarding such HDMI audio issues with Onkyo AVRs I don’t see any successful approach at all.
So, don’t hold your breath.
Looks like same problem here;
Different AVR, but also using Roon OS. I wonder if Roon OS has issues with some HDMI implementations?
Very likely nothing to do with Roon/ROCK and everything to do with the Onkyo and what display you have it connected to. My Anthem MRX-720 had an issue connected to my 4k display, but I run an HDMI switch to force the EDID (Amazon.com: 4K@60Hz HDMI Splitter 1x2 4:4:4,18 Gbps,Supports Soundbar,HDCP 2.2,HDCP 2.3 Bypass,EDID,Duplicate/Mirror/Copy,Downscale, HDR,Dolby Vision Atmos,4K HDMI Splitter 1 in 2 Out for Dual Monitors : Electronics). BTW, there is zero reason to use more HD space to save 5.1 files as DSF when you need to convert it to PCM anyway.
I run any kind of music file from 2.0 to 4.0 to 5.1 PCM-Flac without issues from a NUC running ROCK connected directly to my Anthem AVR.
Thanks for jumping in @Tyler_Rynberg
I forgot I hadn’t tried disconnecting the HDMI between the Onkyo and my TV. Did this, turned off the NUC, powered off the Onkyo, powered on the Onkyo, powered on the NUC, and still no joy on DSF or FLAC MCH files.
I haven’t tried the HDFury yet. I’m supposed to put it between the NUC and Onkyo, right?
You should normally say in the Onkyo’s setting not to transfer audio to your TV btw. don’t use the EDID from your TV for audio.
The HDFury comes between your Nuc and the Onkyo.
