Description of Issue

Roon works fine in my living room via android tablet/phone to naim streamer.
In the bedroom, however, where I have a different wifi access point via TPLink over the powerline, roon says it cannot find my core (=Nucleus) when I start the app on my android phone; Yet, this wifi network comes from the same router and uses the same IP range as the one in the living room.
Funy thing is: RoonARC works just fine in the bedroom on the same access point. So, what’s your problem, you may well ask. None, I guess, except that I would like to understand why the regular roon app can’t see the Nucleus on any other wifi accesss point than the one in the iving room.
Thanks for any enlightenment anyone can send my way!

Hi @Leo_Reijnen,

We’d be happy to help illuminate what’s happening here and provide any advice and assistance as able. It’s certainly frustrating to lose control of a Core from the next room.

Multiple wifi access points can introduce traffic filtering or otherwise prevent mDNS and multicast from passing traffic from the router to the access point. This can cause endpoints and Remotes to lose sight of the Core.

Roon Remote relies on a different discovery mechanism than Roon ARC, allowing for greater feature control (like multi-Zone playback), but requiring a more stable internet connection.

If you’re able to share screenshots of the web GUI settings for your router or any other network hardware, we should be able to learn more about what’s causing the blockage here. Please enable mDNS, multicast, and IGMP snooping if those settings are available.

Do you have any firewalls enabled?

We’ll follow up from there.

Hello Connor,

Thanks for looking into this. I’m afraid I am clueless about things like ‘web GUI settings’, mDNS, multicast and IGMP snooping’ and I can’t find any of these settings in my Draytek Vigor2133 router anyway. The firewall in the router is on in ICMP mode (is that the same as IGMP?) and the Win10 firewall is also ‘on’.
But anyway, I’ll be switching to a different provider soon and then I will have a mesh wifi network (and a different router too). Will a mesh wifi setup automatically solve the problem?
Again, thanks for your efforts.
Leo

Maybe this will help. Mesh isn’t always working perfectly.

Hi @Leo_Reijnen,

No worries, we’re here to help you through setting up the best network for Roon within the natural limitations of your hardware and environment. Please review the Networking Best Practices link that @fietser helpfully shared, as this contains some info regarding Mesh Networks that you’ll find useful when it comes time to switch.

A mesh network will most likely prove more reliable than your powerline adapter access points. Powerline adapters, while handy, rely on the electrical network in your home without much consideration for electromagnetic interference, build materials, etc. whereas a mesh network ought to give you the settings capability to adjust some of the Multicast traffic filters I mentioned above.

No need to get into the weeds yet - once you’ve updated your network to the new ISP, please post any questions here about setup for Roon, and we’ll help you out.

Thanks, that’s informative.

Happy to report that installing a mesh wifi network has solved the problem!

Hmmm, having a related issue…

The suspense is killing me… Pray. What is this related issue?

Thanks and sorry for the suspense. I was researching last night and saw this thread. It was going to lock and I was half asleep so I preserved it with my cryptic note.

My strange and related network issue. In my music room, my core is no longer found. It is available everywhere else in the house.

I have strong internet to my music room and am not using a router in it for that reason. I was able to use Roon before. I can use Roon in the rest of the house. When I go into the room, my iPad and phone show Roon searching for the Core. The Core is on a Windows PC upstairs. The Windows PC is Ethernet connected. My streamer in the room is ethernet connected and ipad Roon sees it when outside the room.

I was away for a while so am not sure when the problem started or what would have changed? Window update?

This will eventually drive me a little crazy. Grateful for any guidance from Roon and my forum colleagues.

Seeing that thread will close in two days - shall I start a fresh one…?

I strongly suggest you open a new Support Request and fill out the post template with the full details of your Roon and network setup. That way the Support team will have a better overview of your issue and situation. Thanks.
