Hi Mike, for FLAC we use COMPOSERSORT (this is the same way round as ARTISTSORT etc). For WAV/AIF/DSF (this uses ID3 like mp3) we use defacto standard introduced by iTunes, the TSOC frame and for Mp4 we use soco atom
I can give you complete tag mapping in this doc - (shows both SongKong and MusicBrainz Picard)
Hi Paul,
The thing I find musicbrainz most useful for is populating non-Classical composers. Particularly box sets and compilations. It’s not exhaustive but my experience is in that case musicbrainz seems to populate composer or writer rather than artist or album artist. There are rules but the end result is composers will end up in either the composer or writer tag even in the same box.
I couldn’t see a WRITER mapping in your spreadsheet. What does songkong do in these cases?
Hi Tony, its writes to Composer since when sleeves notes say Written by it usually means Composed by and whoever has entered the details of the release into MusicBrainz has probably transcribed it a bit literally. Indeed the MusicBrainz style guidelines say
In many cases, the composer, lyricist and/or librettist relationship types should be used, even if the liner notes say this work was “written by” the artist, since we [prefer specific relationship types
(https://musicbrainz.org/doc/Style/Relationships#Prefer_Specific_Relationship_Types).
The other reason we put in composer is that the tag used by MusicBrainz Picard for Writer is not a standard tag, and therefore likley to be ignored by most players, whereas the Composer field is a standard field that is (fairly) well supported.
We do also have separate fields for Arranger and Lyricist
Thanks for clearing that up.
Hi Paul,
I actually tried to purchase a songkong licence but I have made a right mess of it as I found the shop completely incomprehensible. I have ended up paying twice for a pro licence that has been sent to a paypal email I have no idea how to get into. Who can i contact to sort this out?
Hi Tony, sorry you found the Shop confusing, it is meant to be simple click on one button and pay, but it is possible that what you see via Paypal is different to what I see, especially if outside the UK, I do plan to add a non Paypl option. Paypal should send to the email you have configure with PayPal. I have already refunded one payment so you can either email paultaylor at jthink dot net and I will forward license onto your email address you send me. or fix paypal to use the correct email address, make another purchase and I will refund the other purchase.
Paul and myself have had a private exchange and I just want to say publicly that he has sorted it all out very quickly.
There are a few quirks but I must say songkong features seem to make it a very good match for roon.
