One of the features that has been asked of Roon over the yrs is for some ‘mini’ mode of their desktop interface. While everyone has their own ideas as what to include on a mini-mode, there are some simple basics such as;
(1) Basic transport controls (Play/Pause, Forward and Back)
(2) Current track name with artist and album name including album art
(3) Active/Playing Endpoint (and ability to change)
I’ve been after a mini-mode for a few years now. I found a simple pseudo solution using the Roon Web Controller (RWC) extension and a Chrome extension. Since using the RWC already provides a webpage tab, all we need to do is make that tab into a little stand-alone ‘kiosk mode’ like window. This can be easily done using the Chrome extension ‘Tab to Popup’. TabToPopup window is a convenient Chrome browser extension that allows users to quickly convert the current tab into a standalone popup window - is scalable and moveable like an ordinary window. And just like the normal RWC Chrome tab, there are no scroll-bars or secondary tool bars to clutter up the mini screen/window.
If you’re not using the Web Control extension, you will need that installed. Mike Plugge has done a great job in creating the Web Controller that I use pretty much every day. I believe there are installation instructions on Mike’s Github. I use version 1.2.13.
Next, is to install the Chrome ‘TabtoPopup’ extension. This is available in the Chrome web store. When installed the icon should be displayed in the extension section of the address bar. This is the icon;

The next step is to point your browser to the IP address of your RWC which should open up a standard, normal looking Chrome tab with the RWC interface. Like this;
At this point, click on the Chrome extension icon on the URL bar;
You should see the tab change to a Windows popup window. At this point you can move the window around on your desktop, and resize to whatever size works for you. Select an active endpoint and you should see whatever is playing - with all the same features of the RWC offers and provides.
I know this solution very much mimics the Chrome kiosk mode, and there may very well be some command line parameters you could include when executing the RWC url to do something similar, but this was a ‘quick-n-dirty’ way for me to achieve what I was already using.
Thanks again to Mike Plugge for his RWC extension. Enjoy.
