Nas Drive for Roon and HQ Player

Hi all,

Any recommendations for a Nas for running Roon and HQ player. I am looking to upsample DSD256 but dont want to spend alot if possible. If I can keep the price resonable I would be happy. Im currently using PC, Roon, HQ player Desktop 5.

Many thanks

My understanding is that HQP needs a LOT of computing power - so much so that it has the option to run it on dedicated graphics cards. I doubt that you find a NAS with that kind of power or that it makes sense to do so

Ah, Yeah fair enough. I will likely stick with PC then as I cant come away from Roon/HQ player combo now.

Next step is to upgrade CPU. Currently I7 4790K.

Thanks

Depends what you are doing.

Some people use HQPlayer server running on an Raspberry Pi4…

So 4 questions:

  1. What are you doing
  2. What DAC
  3. What NAS can run HQPlayer Embedded and Roon. Depends on the OS.
  4. What do you need your NAS to do? Need to be a traditional NAS or is Ubuntu Server with hard drive connected sufficient?

Ah… the Devil’s Canyon quad core. Definitely a bit dated now. Hqplayer would definitely be happier with a bit more clock speed and more cores.

It was a nice chip. I still have one in a z97 hackintosh.

This is also a very valid point!:face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Purley for streaming Roon/HQ combo. Was really to save having PC on so much.

Dac is internal dac in IFI Neo stream going balanced out into Trigon Exxact.

Cheers

Yes, will look to upgrade to I9 in near future :grinning:

Yeh but same question.

What I mean by what are you doing is what do you want HQP output to be.

Huge difference in CPU requirements between PCM192k and DSD512 EC output.

And other questions I had above too

As per post i would be happy with dsd256 but dac can handle 512. I have no clue about Ubuntu but open to options and advise.

Thanks

I have said what i want it to do. Output Roon and HQ player to a minimum of dsd256. Ive also said im open to options regading nas or something else but i have no knowledge of how they are set up ect…

When Apple gets their $h!t together and starts pulling off higher single core scores, we may be able to get 512 to work without spending $4000 for the computer…

The only part that is then going to up the price is their ridiculous price getting to or over 32gb of ram.

Currently the only good thing I can say about the silicon Mac I have is low power draw… all other things it’s mediocre at best.

My apologies to @jussi_laako and to others reading… It is unfair for me to say it can’t do 512, cause it can. But I can’t get it working with the settings Ike. I like using ECv with processor heavy filters. I and many realize that, at this time, GPU offload is so helpful when trying to achieve 512 with the more demanding settings. When you push hqplayer to its extremes, it will reveal where your hardware has weaknesses. I primarily use hqplayer on Ubuntu w/cuda offload.

AppleSilicon does do incredibly well with almost all using 256. With certain. 512 settings a bit more single core power out of Apple would be nice.

I am not overly happy with the one Official “Apple branded” computer running macOS I use. I have tons of negative energy towards it and very little positive.

On the other hand, I am extremely happy with hqplayer. One of the few purchases I’ve made that I have tons of positive energy towards and very, very little negative.

Needs more
