NAS or External Thunderbolt/USB HD for library

Hi

I’m looking to upgrade by TS-410 Qnap NAS and wondering what works better. A Mac with an external HD connected by USB or Thunderbolt or ethernet to a NAS?

The Mac will run Roon Server and be in the same cupboard away from the listening room.

Is there a sound quality difference ?

I used to run the core on a Windows 10 laptop and the storage on a NAS, I now run core on a Windows 10 nuc and the storage on USB attached disks, I have not noticed any difference in audio quality.
