· EE smart hub in the garage with DECO node/access point providing MLO Internet access, ROON core running on Windows 11 PC, wired Cat 6 network to MELCO switch to NAIM NDX streamer
This sounds like it may be a DAC synchronisation as a troubleshooting step can you reboot you DAC please.
If that doesn’t help, aid Roon’s support team, please supply details of your DAC and how it is connected to Roon, also if this Roon/DAC combination has been ok in the past.
I’ll try that Thx Carl… the same combination didn’t cause this problem before I moved house last year… but I just can’t work out what is different now!
Set up is EE smart hub in the garage with DECO node/access point providing WiFi 7 MLO Internet access for the ROON core running on Windows 11 PC, otherwise wired Cat 6 network from the Deco to a MELCO switch, then to NAIM NDX streamer DAC then Naim amplifier to speakers
Is the clicking through your speakers or a mechanical sound from the DAC or other component?
My Schiit Yggdrasil (DAC) clicks (mechanical click from within its chassis) when it senses a sample rate change due to a muting relay to protect against pops in downstream devices (speakers, headphones, etc.).
Does the issue only happen when playing TIDAL content, or does it happen regardless of content played? Does your System Output zone display the same behavior? Can you try to bypass the switch?
Thanks… can’t bypass the switch.. occurs with any content but only now at the very beginning of the album.. nb. I’m using Muse to upsample everything to the same rate which has stopped it happening when switching tracks
I’m rather sure it’s caused by the combination of your analog output stage carrying a DC offset in conjunction with an in circuit mute relay - nothing Roon could possibly help fix.
Also, does it also happen, sometimes more, sometimes a little less obvious, when you skip forward/reverse within a track, or when ramping DSP volume while playing a track, if setup in such a way?
If so, that’s caused by a deliberate design decision in Roon’s RAAT protocol, which is not executing those commands at a signal’s zero-crossing point, but instantly at arbitrary signal levels, causing sharp popping/clicking noises, especially audible in systems with direct DAC to amp connections.
Roon had admitted to that in the forum, but are less than interested in fixing it, due to all the ROON ready devices probably needing firmware updates.
It’s the major reason I left Roon in the fall of '24 …
