The Asus website says it’s down for maintenance now, so I can’t look. I know that I have found Asus BIOS updates there before, so it should be possible once it’s back up
Please review the instructions on how to create a bootable USB stick for RoonOS installation, something is likely skewed in that process. I wouldn’t worry too much about the BIOS update, it’s likely not an issue with such a NUC
I second @Mikael_Ollars , don’t worry about any bios update, just create your rock installer usb stick and continue with that.
Update using the F7 Flash Tool:
Plug the USB drive with the .BIO file into a USB port on the NUC.
Power on (or restart) the NUC and press F7 when you see the prompt during boot to enter the BIOS flash tool.
The tool will show a file browser. Select the USB drive and then select the .BIO file you downloaded.
Confirm the update. The process will begin.
The Asus seems to be stuck on not being able to find a bootable device. It briefly flashes F2, F7 and somwthing else. Ihave installed two Crucial SODIMMs a 2tb SK Hylink nvme, and an 8tb SATA 2.5” SSD. I ordered a single 8Gb SODIMM, and 12gb SATA M,2, NVME overnight from Amazon due today
Have you followed the steps here to configure the BIOS?
Yes, but the Asus does not have a ,bio for my Asus model. I entered my SN and just searched by product naME.
I’m not talking about updating the BIOS with a bio file - I’m talking about configuring the BIOS correctly so that you can boot with the ROCK install file.
OK, Next did “Creating the Bootable USB Drive with Etcher”. **Download and install Etcher (**which I did. 5. Installing. Method A (Set Boot Order in BIOS). Pressing the F2 key doesn’t work as the NUC does not respond to F2. So that leads us on to Method B. F10-which also doesn’t work A bootable device has not been detected which is where it always dies. I ordered another SODIM (8GB) and a Silicon Power 128GB NVMe M.2 PCIe Gen3x4 2280 SSD and a Timetec Premium 8GB DDR4 2400MHz. IOf these don’t work I’ll go back to Roon site and order Crucial 8GB, 260-pin SODIMM, DDR4 PC4-19200, and a SAMSUNG 970 EVO Plus SSD 250GB NVMe M.2 Internal Solid State Drive.
Why don’t you just ignore the unnecessary BIOS update as was already mentioned?
It can be a bit tricky to get into the BIOS of some NUC’s, but should be possible by hammering softly away on the F2 key during boot up.
And, if your NUC/boot drive was new, it doesnt have a startup disk. If i’m not mistaken, pressing F8 will initiate the Boot menu, where you would be able to select a properly set up RoonOS USB drive.
I have, 5. Installing. Plug in the USB Drive: Power On the NUC and Boot from USB: Method B (Manual Boot Menu): This is a faster, one-time method.
Method B (Manual Boot Menu): This is a faster, one-time method.
With the NUC powered off, plug in the bootable USB drive.
Turn on the NUC and immediately start pressing the F10 key on your keyboard.
Continue pressing it until a menu appears asking which device you’d like to boot from.
Use the arrow keys to select your USB flash drive from the list and press Enter.
That does not work either. I have a bootable USB with the Roon image on it. no menu appears jus the can’t find a bootable drive,
OK sorry I missed this
Thanks for helping. When the SODIMM and NVME arrive today I will try to substitute them one at a time, The SATA 8tb is well within specs and so oroblem has to be I suspect the NVME or the SODIMs.
You are barking up the wrong tree here…
If you get the message onscreen that a boot drive was not found, you can be sure that the NUC and its memory is okay. I’d suggest removing any media drive while setting up, just with the intended m.2 NVMe installed. Then, try and retry getting into the BIOS by F2/Delete key…
Make sure you have the NUC in powered off when trying the key strokes. They can be put in a “suspend mode” where no key strokes are effective?
Otherwise, see if you can find the procedure for factory resetting bios, it usually takes a small jumper to be manipulated.
I actually made a small guide on a local forum, it can be translated and might be useful:
Will do. Im going to give this a break for awil and resume later.
I noticed in my guide that the Asus NUC13 i used for this has Secure Boot activated by default , which messes up the boot choice selection… So, make sure to enter the bios, disable secure boot, and make sure you can identify the intended system m.2.
Then you are set to go with the USB drive and RoonOS installation.
Exactly. /10 chars
Is F2 the only way to get into the Bios? It may be unrelated but I’m using an LG monitor and I have had issues with LG monitors acting oddly. I wonder if the LG could be timing out before the NUC can respond? Amazon just delivered a new BenQ GW2283 Computer Monitor 22" FHD 1920x1080p | IPS.
