So i’ve just updated my home network.
I’ve installed a TP link M9 Deco Plus, to make this work i’ve added a BT Business Router running in modem mode. So the Deco is working as router and mesh network.
Most of my home is ethernet connected and only mobile devices use wi-fi, my sonos speakers are on sonosnet.
I was downloading some large files today and the Roon music started cutting off, everything was on ethernet.
This made me wonder if I would be better installing my original BT router to manage DHCP and the ethernet connections and just use the Deco to manage the Mesh WiFi and share the load across the two of them.
Does that sound like a good plan or a waste of time, i’ve never had any cutting off issues before I changed the router element.
I think we need more information here about what devices exactly are wired, which devices are on the wifi, which device you were playing music to, and on which device you were downloading files
Well wired you have, Nas, 4 network IP cameras, TV, Freesat box, Apple TV, Pi, Gaming PC, Bluesound, Sonos for sonos net, 2 Deco base units.
Main hifi is ethernet via Bluesound and Pi.
WiFi is 2 iphones, 2 ipads, 5 sonos speakers on sonosnet.
The concern is , is the Deco upto routing all that data or is it best left to lightweight wifi duties, the files i was downloading we’re about 16 gig in size.
OK, I meant only the devices related to the music and the download, but thanks
I still don’t understand what you were playing the music to, the Sonos or the main hifi with the wired Blusound. What I am getting at: If the music played over wifi and the download went to a device on wifi, then the dropouts were probably a wifi issue.
If the music played to a device on ethernet, and the Roon core is also on ethernet, then basically nothing at all should lead to dropouts for the music unless you purposefully overload the ethernet with a gigabit per second of data.
The bluesound which is also on the same network switch as the gaming PC but all the switches are 1gig network abut the BB only has about a max of 70mps download.
I’d expect an ethernet network to handle that, which makes me think the Deco won’t?
@Phil_Ryan, one other thought. Roon and SonosNet do not seem to play well over the past few years. What many Roon users do to play to their Sonos devices is connect their Sonos units directly via Ethernet or WiFi to their network and not use SonosNet within Roon. You may not have the same experience, but wanted to let you know about this potential issue.
Yes I’ve had issues, but the only one I have with Roon is playing BBC Radio which other users have, I just use the Sonos app now for radio, and Roon plays streaming files fine.
I’ve put this down to using the older Play 1 speakers that don’t have Airplay.
