Thanks. I will
Does this also apply to android tablets/smartphones? I see my server (nucleus) has 2.65/1653 but my tablet has 2.64/1646 and I donāt see the random sort option. Is there a way to force the update or is it in the hands of android/samsung?
Yes. From my phone I am on Early Access):
Thatās because it didnāt update yet ![]()
You need to wait until it passed Googleās validation in the Play Store. After this, add usual, the phone will pick a time to auto-update, but you can check in the Play Store if it shows an update button before this.
Alternatively, you should be able to download the latest and install from the APK package manually:
Whatās the point of random in focus? Why not use shuffle
Shuffle shuffles tracks, random album view gives you a list of random albums to pick from.
A big difference imo
Itās not in Focus, itās in Sort - they are independent functions. They may be side by side on the screen, but they do different things - just like the brake pedal and the accelerator in a carā¦
Why not shuffle albums, thatās what I do
Seems like same as random to me
Because up until version 2.65 there was no way to shuffle albums in Roon itself? There is a 3rd party extension to shuffle albums, but the function has been absent from Roon until nowā¦
Ok but I have been shuffling albums for a long time in roon
Using the Extension, I assumeā¦
Glad to see this feature, I have also written an app to choose and play a random album from your library: GitHub - markmcclusky/roon-random-app: A desktop application for discovering music through intelligent random album selection from your Roon library. Ā· GitHub
Still donāt see the ability to shuffle by album in Roon, but the sort by random gets us pretty close.
No I donāt use the extension. I go to album library and just hit shuffle.
You mean you are hitting Shuffle in the Queue screen?
As has been said, that shuffles tracks, not albumsā¦
I go to my albums. Instead of hitting play now, I use drop down and hit shuffle. It then shuffles album tracks, which is what is supposed to do. How is random different. Unless it plays a full album , then goes to next album and plays full album and so on? I guess thatās what it does. Just not useful for me.
If I want to play full albums I just play them. Itās not random, but I donāt want it to be, but I could just close my eyes and pick one, randomly, if I wanted random.
Only time I really want random is to just shuffle album library and hear random tracks from library. Thats is the option most useful for me.
Two different functions. I want to select the album I play by myself. I like to browse my album library through the album view and do the selection myself. Previous sort options have given kind of locked-in views of the library, sorting all the albums in the same way every time. With random, like the name says, I get new random sort every time and this brings old and forgotten albums on top and encourages me to play this stuff also. With thousands of albums in the library, this is very useful. I also like to play full albums or many tracks from same album at the same time. I rarely play one track from album and move to the next album. Shuffle is not shuffling whole albums, it shuffles tracks, like you said.
Got it, but random feature does not put least played albums in the front, thatās why random . I use least played option to hear stuff that has not been played or rarely played
Exactly - youāre shuffling tracks in an album, not shuffling albums (which preserves the track order in each album). Thatās what Random Sort of album doesā¦
And using the combination of Focus and Random Sort in the Album browser opens up all sorts of slicing and dicing in the resulting list of albumsā¦
Right, I just donāt like to random shuffle compete albums, just random tracks from random albums. If I want to listen to a full album, which i do often, Iād rather pick the ones I want to hear. If I want to hear album that hasnāt been played or hardly played, I use the least played option and pick an album from that. To each his own I guess
I am the original requester. Your question has been asked so many times, so here goes:
The issue is I want to see the albums in random order, and PICK what album I want to play. Why? Because I have a ton of albums, and even with a filter (say 70ās albums) I still have a ton. I want to see the list randomized so albums I forgot about resurface. Note that every time you hit sort by Random, the order changes. Perfect.
Ok, but for me, I could care less about seeing albums in random order. If I want to hear albums I forgot about, Iād much rather use the least played option. Thatās just me.
