Description Of Issue

Installed Roon Core on 12/11. Started indexing music on NAS. Multiple crashes with no indication of what happened - app just quit. But when it was working it all worked great - played from NAS and Qobuz perfectly, even 24/196 from Qobuz and SACD transcoded to PCM from NAS.

12/12 - roon core continued to quit unexpectedly. Restarted PC, then Roon, then OK for awhile - still indexing NAS.

12/13 - Roon core hung. Rebooted PC and entered username/pw - now Roon Core won’t start.

12/13 - removed and re-installed roon core. Roon core will not start.

Hi @THOMAS_ROSBACK — Sorry for the trouble here!

Would you kindly use the directions found here and send us over a set of logs using a shared Dropbox link? Our team will take a look.

Can you confirm what GPU your Core uses?

Hi Dylan,
Open GL 3.1.0 build 9.17.10.4459

Since I first posted I reviewed the logs and there were a large number of OpenGL errors. So I uninstalled Core and installed server.

Now everything is working - except when I go to index my large NAS library.

I think instead of torturing you trying to get this dumpster-fire of an old desktop running, I’m going to buy a NUC. I like Roon and want to create a stable system for it to run on.

I consider this issue closed and thank you for your timely support!

Tom

Thomas, while setting up dedicated and well-configured hardware (e.g. NUC) is certainly a good idea, you might get your old PC running Roon just fine if you update your graphics driver. This is why @dylan might have asked about your GPU (graphics processing unit) in your PC. You should try to get the newest possible drivers from the web of the GPU manufacturer, not from Microsoft. My advice would be to update the graphics driver and try again if Roon is running stable.

Thank you Andreas,
I am running the latest gpu drivers from Intel.
This machine is from 2011, maybe earlier, and many of the HW/SW components are no longer supported.
Maybe I’m just looking for an excuse to upgrade.

PC years are like dog years but at fifteen to one.
So a 135 year old PC is doing well :joy:

I find the effort of keeping old hardware alive and useful quite rewarding. Often it offers good opportunities to learn new tricks. I would install Ubuntu Server on this machine to give it a second life. For basic streaming to a couple of zones it should do well enough.

You might try the 32 bit version of Roon if you haven’t. That seems to work better with old Intel graphics chipsets.

I finally bought a NUC10i7FNH and it’s running ROCK flawlessly.
Setup was mostly straightforward. Problem solved!
Tom
