New Synology NAS setup. Wow is this good

I want to thank all who have put countless hours into making this happen.
28 TB in drives 4 drives
1 more for roon
1 more for cashing
Streamed to a server for hq player out to usb
Next up a HB. but as of now am amzong sound
A wow for sure. I know I look to kick you roon guys at times
But you also should get thanked the many ways
You have improved our sound.
I thank you
Al D

So what model of Synology NAS do you have? I have been thinking about using my Synology NAS as a Roon core, but have concerns about performance. I have a DS918+ which is equipped with a Celeron J3455, 1.5g with 4 cores. From what I read, Roon Labs recommends an Intel i3 or above for optimal performance.

I have a Zeon I7 3.5 g it was my player pc that steamed to my dac.
I currently use it with two pci exp cards
One card allows for 4 sata ports
Using all 6 Main board now
Three 8TB
one 4 TB
One 120 gig ssdruve fro room
One ssd for cache caching only on JBOD raid
Going to add today a cache for roon
Second pci card is a 4 port enterprise grade lan card
It is dhcp enabled and serves my second dac pc and my HB
It’s set up so that my music network is on its own network up addresses.
So far it works great

I would like someone interested in having a Synology NAS built from sactch using the hack be it what ever one meaning 9 or 7 series hacks.
I just finished playing with this type setup for two days
Using spinning drives or SSD for music
Also room core and non roon core using a 3 pc set up
Also using cache on music drives and roon drives.
Also various types of drives as well for cache
So far noting beats a three pc setup. I have many lps voltage bus rails going
So each drive has its own v bus only when I use the full setup with 8 drives is there any common v bus but only for the 4 spinning. Drives.
I even tried just one spinning drive and SS dive for music.

Below is findings as thus far
Cache on roon core inside is bad in degrades the sound no matter what drive I use
Cache on main music drive raid does help
I use JBOD basic for the above testing
Please comment All let’s try to get this in one pc as a combo.
I even tried a faster pc an I5 coffee it just cannot catche the sound of three a pc setup.
I tried an internal lan card enterprise grade for making it its own router and network SW this works but does not get sound to a three pc setup. For me I think it’s roon on the synology that runs linux that’s screwing this up.
Plesee comwback woth ideas
Thanks in advance

@albert_dattolo What is the HB you mention?

I’m still confused about what you are talking about as a 3 PC setup. Do you mean Pieces or Personal Computers.

I dont see any reference to you using a NAS (maybe you are doing something in your computer like freenas?) You are not even talking about what operating systems you are employing here - assuming you mean 3 Personal Computers.

Maybe a diagram would help here too.

Understand you might be on a journey of discovery here but I am thinking your setup is going to be way over complicated for most people here who would like to keep this simple.

Maybe this might be better moved to the Tinkering area.

I’m a tech guy but your descriptions are not really ideal for many others here that might be interested in following along…Just saying.

Albert,

My question was what Synology NAS you were running the Roon Core on since the title of your thread was Synology NAS setup. I just assumed you were running the Synology Roon Server app that is discussed here: https://blog.rieke.tv/roon-server-on-nas/#1520563824150-68270396-1c8e.

What you are talking about is way too complicated for me. Right now, I am running the Roon Core software on my i7 PC, that has an internal SSD which holds the library files. I have the music files on a Synology DS918+. Everything works fabulously with that setup. I was just thinking about maybe using the Synology application to make the DS918 the server, to take the load off my PC and so the Roon server is “always on”.

Yes, I too would like to thank all those involved with developing the package that allows Roon to work with my Synology Diskstation 1513+.

My only question is the caution to have the core on a SSD. I decided to try running the core on the spinning disk and it works flawlessly. Is it my small library? Or that fact that I have very fast spinning disks with solid transfer rates and a very high speed internet that allows me to get away with this?

Please continue to support NAS implementations and thank you once again!

I always thought that the reason to have the Core on an SSD was because of the amount of time Roon accesses the drive during usage. The wear and tear on a spinning disk could cause premature failure. At least this is what I was led to believe. Small library is not the issue I think. It’s how often you use Roon. Me? I use Roon on three different systems in my home and at least one zone is in use almost 12 hours a day. An SSD has no moving parts to wear out. If what you have works for you then more power to you. Just make sure you have a backup.

I use mine 24/7 the program boots from thumb drive.
I chose jbod for disks and use a SSD for a buffer
Does anyone use the nas as a SAN ? I have a 4 port enterprise lan card in mine ?
