Thank you for reaching out to Roon Support. I know it can be frustrating when new music doesn’t show up in your library, especially when you’ve followed your usual, previously successful process! Let’s figure out what is causing the hold-up.
To help us get a clearer picture of what might be happening, could you please provide a few more details?
What exactly did you add? (Please let us know the album or track name, and the specific file format, such as FLAC, ALAC, or MP3).
Where exactly did you add it? (The exact folder path where you placed the files).
When did you add them? (An approximate date and time so we can check our diagnostic logs around that specific timestamp, if needed).
While we wait for those details, let's try a manual refresh of that folder to see if it prompts Roon to recognize the files:
Remove the newly added files or folder from your watched Roon storage location (move them to your desktop or another temporary folder).
Go to Roon Settings > Storage, click the three dots (...) next to your watched folder, and select Library cleanup.
Move the files back into your Roon storage location.
Run Force Rescan.
Please let us know if the files appear after trying this, or if you are still having trouble!
Let me flesh out the factual background: file having the trouble–Otis Taylor Blackhole Boogie band DSD 256 acquired via download from PS Audio on MacMini running 14.7.8 then loaded on external hard drive known as Music I>Music folder right next to two other Otis Taylor selections DSD 256 from the same source and play perfectly. This was done a couple of times(unsuccessfully) the last of which was June 11 and again June 12. These most recent attempts were done after completely removing the file from the hard drive, redownloading and using the Roon procedure for adding folders which on its face appeared to be proper and successful and exactly like the previous addition of the Otis Taylor selections which appear ready to play and do so just fine. Using Force Rescan and restarting the computer did not result in the Blackhole Boogie band selection appearing. Reviewing the entire Roon library from top to bottom did not file the file in question. I will try the same methodology adding the Library cleanup. PS Audio did not have any suggestions that worked. The MacMini in the Music System(2014) is running 12.6 and is used exclusively for the Music System. Still not found or playing. I will update. Thanks, Mark.
Update:I saved the troubled file to the desktop and removed it from the main Music file on Music drive I by placing in the trash. I also removed the file from the storage section showing added files. In the library section. I ran the clean up library exercise. I then moved the file from the desktop back to the Music File on Music Drive I where it sits together with the other Otis Taylor files which play fine. Using the add folder function in the storage section to add the file. It says it added 9 files/songs It looks like the other additions of the other Otis Taylor files which play fine. A force scan, accessed via the (…) function was run on both the troubled file and the main Music file which holds all the files playable by Roon. A complete scroll down of all files in Roon did not find the file. The troubled file is simply not added to the Roon collection. Thanks, Mark.
The offending file has been uploaded with one song deleted to fit within the 5Gb limit. The other Otis Taylor files that play perfectly are about the same size or larger–DSD256 all.
Quick update: everything you shared came through and got recognized correctly on our end, thanks for uploading it, that helped a lot.
Separately, I wanted to reach out because I’ve been keeping an eye on our servers, waiting for the diagnostics report from your system. For some reason it isn’t reaching us, even after re-enabling diagnostics on your account. I also ran a quick test and was able to submit a similar report from my own setup here, so something else is going on with how yours is sending through.
So we can move forward, could you please try this instead: add the music to a watched folder, wait about half an hour, and then manually send us the logs using the directions found here:
Two separate zipped Roon logs and Roon Server logs uploaded to you today 7-27-26. I hope this works.
Separate issue–Roon does not always recognize the PS Audio 512 streamer/Dac upon opening. I have to shut down the streamer and re-initialize before Roon shows the 512 as an audio device.
Thanks for sending the Roon Server logs, they told us exactly what’s going on, and there’s good news: the album is not failing to import. Your latest logs show Roon Server scanning the folder, keeping all 9 tracks, and identifying the album with cover art. It’s in your library right now.
The reason you couldn’t find it is that Roon files albums by the tags inside the files, not by the folder name. This record’s tags read as:
Artist: Black Hole Boogie Band
Album: Protostar
So it’s sorted under “B” (Black Hole Boogie Band) or “P” (Protostar), not near your other Otis Taylor albums under “O.” That’s why scrolling didn’t turn it up. Try searching your library for Protostar and it should appear.
There’s one cleanup worth doing. Along the way, the same album folder got added to Roon several separate times (a few name variations, plus a copy on the Desktop and one that ended up inside an “Adele/19” folder). Roon treats those as duplicates and hides most of them, which adds to the confusion. To tidy this up:
Go to Settings → Storage. Remove every entry that points at an individual album folder (the various “BlackHoleBoogieBand” ones). Keep just your one main Music folder, it already covers everything inside it.
On the drive, make sure there’s only one copy of the album folder, sitting directly in your Music folder. Delete the Desktop copy and any copy tucked inside another artist’s folder.
Go to Settings → Library → Clean Up Library to clear out the leftover duplicates.
Turn on Settings → Library → “Show hidden tracks and albums” if you’d like to confirm nothing’s been tucked away.
One more note: on July 7 and 13, Roon had trouble reading a few of these files from Music Drive I (brief input/output errors), though later scans read them fine. If any track still won’t play after the cleanup, re-copy that file fresh from your PS Audio download to rule out a damaged copy on the drive.
Give that a try and let us know if Protostar shows up where you’d expect, happy to keep helping.
It didn’t work as simply as you might have thought. I opened Roon and looked for Protostar on the Music 1 drive in the Music folder. Not found under either “B” or “P” nor in the Adele 19 folder. I did find the “Folders” section to find the main Music folder and a couple of others including the Blackhhole Boogie band folder. When clicked it opened as Protostar–Blackhole Boogie band, showed up on the list of Roon files available with the “■■”. I trashed the desktop versions and the reference to the Blackhole Boogie Band in the storage section. The other folders in the folder section were also PS Audio downloads which worked perfectly. There is now one copy of the Protostar album named as Otis Taylor. No copy was found with Adele 19. Am I using the right procedure to add a new download? I could not find the “Show hidden tracks and albums” in the Library section" Is that because there are none or some other reason? So, the album is found, is located with the “■■” and plays just fine.
In starting this session, Roon again failed to recognize my PS Audio 512 DAC/streamer. I had to disable the streamer and re-initialize to use the DAC as an audio zone. This happens at least 50% of the time. The Roon server runs on a MacMini 2014 running 12.7.6- the latest available OS. Any way to fix?
Good to hear Protostar is showing up and playing correctly now. Let’s take the two issues one at a time, starting with the files.
On procedure: what you did was right. For a new download, you can just drop the folder directly into your existing Music folder, which Roon is already watching, no separate storage location needs to be added per album. Adding those extra per-album entries earlier is what caused the duplicate/hidden-copy confusion in the first place, so removing them was the correct fix.
One correction on our end: the “Show Hidden Tracks And Albums” toggle is actually under Settings → General, not Settings → Library. That’s why you couldn’t find it there, we pointed you to the wrong tab. If you want to double check nothing else is tucked away, that’s where to look.
On the PS Audio DAC/streamer not being recognized: let’s treat this as a separate issue so we don’t mix up the diagnostics. Before we dig in, could you please answer a few specific questions the next time it happens?
The exact date and time the streamer fails to show up as an audio zone.
How the PS Audio 512 is connected to your Mac mini, meaning USB, or over the network via RoonReady/RAAT.
Exactly how you’re starting Roon at that point: is this a fresh launch of the Roon app after fully quitting it, or are you reopening/waking a Roon window that was already running in the background?
That’ll let us match it against the right logs. Please let us know once you have that.
Thanks for your help in solving the download mystery.
The Roon Server is run on a MacMini late 2014 running 12.7.6(latest). The MacMini is hard wired via ethernet cable to the same switch that the PS Audio 512 combo DAC/streamer is. With limited exceptions this MacMini is exclusively used for the music system. There is no USB connection. The combination of the predecessor DAC a PSA DSD Mk.2 and PSA Air Lens was always recognized by Roon. Roon is set to automatically open upon starting the MacMini. The failure to recognize is intermittent. I opened Roon fresh after a shutdown and the 512 was recognized without taking the separate action of quiting Roon before shutdown and opening Roon after a shutdown without quiting Roon and opening Roon as a last open item. So, I do not have specific date/times for the problem occurring in the past. I was hoping it would occur today so I could provide new Roon logs. Does quitting Roon before shutdown make things simpler and safer?
