No Audio Devices on Windows 11 found on Roon 1.8 [Solved: same subnet]

Roon Core Machine

Roon Server is running on an HP G800 G1 SFF ( I5, 16GB, 1TB SSHD) with Ubuntu 21.04

Networking Gear & Setup Details

I have a Selfbuild-Firewall (OPNsense) and two unmanged Switches.
My PC and my WIFI are in the same LAN-Subnet. My Roon Server is sitting in the DMZ. My Firewallrules allow all Traffiv between the two Subnets. Not secure, i know, its for testing purposes.

Connected Audio Devices

Connected are the G800 audio outputs but I’m not using them. My Phone is recognized and I can play music. Last Audio Device is my PC. Phone and PC are in the same Subnet.

Library Size

Libarysize ist below 1000 Tracks but I linked Qobuz and Tidal.

Description of Issue

My Phone is recognized as Audio Output but only sometimes. If it’s not recognized I have to restart the Roon Server on Ubuntu and it is back working. Sadly my PC Audio Outputs doesn’t show up. Only my Phone and the g800. Even after rebuilding the RAATServer on both Ubuntu and Windows multiple rebuilds. RAATServer Logs shown connection issues:

07/13 09:21:28 Warn: [easyhttp] [1] Post https://bits.roonlabs.net/1/q/roon.base.,roon.internet_discovery. web exception without response: The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel.

07/13 09:21:34 Warn: [easyhttp] [2] Post https://discovery.roonlabs.net/1/register web exception without response: The request was aborted: Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel.
07/13 09:21:34 Warn: [inetdiscovery] failed to register: Result[Status=NetworkError]

In the logs I can also see that my audio devices on my pc are recognized.

Windows Firewall is turned off and my PC can be found on the Network. I’m woundering why my phone is working sometimes and my PC has no chance to play music.
All Roon Updates are installed.
Is it maybe the Windows 11 update ?

Edit: I forgot to add that I can provide the full logs

Possibly. Do note that Windows 11 is still in alpha/beta stage and therefore not (yet) a supported configuration.

I will try to find a way to test it on Windows 10. An VM should be sufficient or could it create more Problems?

I wasn’t necesarilly pushing you towards Windows 10, more so a heads-up that this might be moved to a category other than support.

The issue seems to point to an issue with the TLS/SSL stack on your Windows 11 setup. There was a ‘recent’ change in requirements sometime in May, now no longer supporting TLS 1.0 and 1.1.

This might be a good place to start looking for a solution.

I tried to check the supported protocols and TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 are supported.
Anyways that does not explain why i have to restart my Roon Server everytime I want to hear music on my phone.

A DMZ is not the place I would ever put a Roon server…what is the reasoning behind this?

Aside from the SSL/TLS issues, this is another unsupported configuration. Roon server needs to be on the same subnet as the clients. It can be made to work however. Are you sure the multicast packets are traversing the subnet boundaries?

Hadn’t the money to buy an Intel NUC or something and Roon wouldn’t be running on a PI4. Or would it? So it was the only device capable running Roon but it’s also my docker host. Told you insecure and in testing.

multicast could be the cause. I will split docker and Roon and move the Roon Server to the lan subnet. Should fix it once for all. Thanks for your help.

Possible they are not traversing the subnet boundaries. Actually it’s my homelab for testing and currently not capable of fixing that.
