Description of Issue

Yesterday there was an 8 hour internet failure due to a technical problem with the internet provider.
I was irritated to find that Roon was no longer running, although my music files are all played locally. No music is streamed from the internet.
It cannot be that this expensive software (Roon) is not able to function for a certain time (as due to this malfunction) without the Internet,
especially since the music is played locally from a NAS.
I find that is a functional indictment and should be recoverable.
Maybe it is already and I just don’t know.
What do the Roonlabs say about it?

Best Regards

Joerg

We had rolling power outages a few months back that took the internet provider out for hours at a time. During those outages I discovered the IPAD remote did not function as a controller without the internet. My Android phone and windows laptop remotes did continue to function so I used those instead.

Thank you Mike,
Should try next time my PC.

This must be something to do with the integrity of your home network once internet connectivity disappears. Does the router still continue to function for example (handing out IP addresses and routing traffic internally). Perhaps the ipad requests a fresh IP address when it starts up and doesn’t get a response from the router? Other devices may hold onto their IP addresses and continue to function for a while? Just speculating really as I think Roon should work fine so long as it doesn’t need to do a licence check (bi-monthly?) at the time and the router is fully functional for local traffic.

Hi Antony,
my internal net and wlan is running fine without internet. So this could not be the reason.
Thanks anyway
Joerg

Checked it in the morning → the Windows PC is working as control point without Internet, the Ipad not. Thanks to Mike_LC again.
So I think it has something to do with the Ipad Roon App.
Would be nice to get a fix for this problem, cause my PC is standing on another floor.

Have a good sunday everyone

Joerg

Hi @Joerg, @dylan, @noris
I was curious about the NO INTERNET situation and I have tested it as well.
Here are my results (router working fine, all other music players/Apps working fine):

  • Win 10 PC pops up a message no Roon connection, local music starts to play but after a while (<2 minutes) the playback stops. If I restart and don’t do something else I think it runs (just tested everything for about 20 minutes).
  • but if I start my Samsung tablet S5e (Android) the roon remote App runs - same popup no Roon connection and if I quit that I get the same break in playback. Then I have to press play again and the playback starts.
  • with my Cellphone Samsung S10e (Android; lasted Update installed) it’s almost the same - just the a little bit worse because of Roon remote hiccups. The Roon App hang up sometimes, it the message appears with no Roon connection it will follow with the same break in playback.
  • I have no iphone, iPad, sorry.

I think it’s interesting that again (as it is with TIDAL steaming) other Apps are able to handle circumstances like not internet connection but Roon not - my experience.
PS: And sorry, I don’t need comments like “This must be something to do with the integrity of your home network”, “it’s your network issue”,… or please come up with facts and what do I have to improve.

Thank you Peter for your contribution.
It would be nice to get a official statement from Roonlabs if this problem is known and if it is worth to work on it to get a solution for it in the near future.

Hi @Joerg,
I think for sure, it’s worth it.
There are many regions in the world with an unstable internet connection (we have heard here from SA for example and I’ve been there many times and even in Germany it’s not everywhere and always the latest and greatest). Sometimes it’s nice just to hear local music from NAS than nothing if your internet provider is down and you do not have TV, radio and internet connection.

Maybe we’ll find some more companions.
@ all: So, please try and post here your experiences.

I shut down my core and network every night in summer so as not to fry stuff with lightening :sunglasses:. Add to that our power utility often has “rolling blackouts” so I am quite experienced at startup procedures

When I start up, if I switch everything on at once, Roon invariably fails to start properly. If I wait until my Router shows internet connection, ie one cup of tea prepared , Roon starts perfectly. I have a routine , and a cup of tea …

There is something Roon needs from the internet to start. I can believe a startup license check but we are told that is monthly.

There are no remote devices involved just the core PC

By SA do you mean South Africa ?

Ironically given all our power trials and tribulations I find our internet, at least my provider to be very stable

I can’t remember an issue in the 4 years I have had this fibre connection. The only blips are where the power goes off or someone pinches the cables to scrap in for copper, even the optical ones (we have some dumb theives) :smiling_imp:

Hi Joerg, I’ve had a ticket open for this issue for several months. Have not heard if it is being looked at yet but I’m pretty sure Roon is aware of it.

The situation in my case: all the entertainment system components have UPS backup systems that kept things going until the backup generator kicks in. The NUC remained up when the internet went down so I don’t know what would have happened if I’d tried to bring it up without internet.

Using the PC remote, when started there would be a brief pause while Roon waited for the response to New releases for you. Then it would continue the initialization without New releases and Tidal/Qobuz. I could play local files without issues. My Android phone worked the same way.

But the IPAD was different. It paused at New releases for you then would just lock up. If the IPAD remote was already in use when the internet dropped it would continue to function until it needed a refresh from Roon then it would lock up.
