No Sound on Sony and Vizio TVs in Whole House Group with Chromecast (ref#Q14H33)

Hi! What’s not quite right with Roon?

· None of the above quite fits

None of the above quite fits

· None of these quite match

Tell us what's going on

· I have configured a Whole House Music system using Roon and Google Home. The system includes Chromecasts (3rd gen), Chromecasts with Google TV, a Chromecast Audio, a Wiim Pro, 2 Sony TV's with Chromecast built-in, and a Vizio TV also with Chromecast built-in. The problem I am having is with the TV's with Chromecast built-in.

When I test the TV's individually using the built-in Chromecast, they work perfectly. Each TV plays sound, and displays the Album art. However, when the TV's are included in the Whole House group, the display shows the Album art, but there is no sound. I also have a Chromecast (3rd gen) installed on each of these TV's. If I use the external Chromecasts in the Whole House group, I get sound but no album art. Obviously, I would prefer to use the built-in Chromcasts, since they display the album art.

Do you have a solution to this issue?

Tell us about your home network

· I have a combo wired/wireless Ubiquiti Wi-Fi 7 2.5Gb network. The 2 Sony TV's have ethernet. Everything else is wi-fi.

Hi Gary,

Thank you for the detailed description — that’s very helpful.

To help us investigate this further, could you please do the following and share the exact timestamps for each test?

  1. Play to each TV individually using the built-in Chromecast (Sony / Vizio)
  2. Play to the same TVs using the external Chromecast (3rd gen)
  3. Play to the full Whole House group once with:
  • built-in Chromecasts
  • external Chromecasts

For each case, please note:

  • The exact time playback starts
  • Whether audio is present or silent
  • One example track used for testing

With those timestamps, we can correlate the behavior in diagnostics and better understand what’s happening with the built-in vs external Chromecast paths.

Thanks for your help — we’ll take it from there.

Hi @Gary_Peaslee,

We’re pinging this thread since we haven’t seen a response yet. Please take a look through @vadim’s response above and let us know if you have any questions. To pinpoint the problem, we’ll at least need to know the basic results (playback/no playback) for each of the three tests he provided.

Thank you!

Sorry for the delay. Upon further research, there is a known issue with incorporating Google Cast enabled TV’s into a speaker group in the Google Home app. Here is a link to a very long discussion on this issue:

Thank you for your help, but this isn’t a Roon issue.
