"No Vocal Songs"/"Instrumental Only" Option

I’ve only noticed this issue lately (the past 6 months or so), but often when I play an ambient album that has no vocals/singing, and then let Roon radio take over after the album finishes, the radio will end up playing songs that have vocals/singing in them. This is really jarring and messes up the whole mood I’m going for in starting with an ambient album that I like. I don’t recall Roon doing this before, so I’m not sure if something has changed recently.

The most simple solutions to me would be either to have a setting toggle to include or not include vocal music in the radio, or, for a less hands-on approach, Roon radio should recognize when an album does not have vocals, and play the radio accordingly. I understand that might be difficult when an artist has a mix of vocal/non-vocal albums they’ve recorded or been involved in, and maybe that’s the issue. From my experience, I don’t think I’ve run into this vocals-on-radio issue when I start with a Brian Eno album, but I think I’ve run into it with John Hopkins and possibly Floating Points. Hopefully those examples help you understand the problem.

I love Roon and I’m a lifetime member, but this issue is annoying enough that I decided to finally reach out about it.

I have yet to find any music service that understands “instrumental only!”

Right? You’d think that would be a metadata tag or something like that.

(And I now realize my post title would probably work better as “instrumental only”.)

There’s no metadata that I know of that indicates instrumental vs vocal. So using Roon Radio to attempt this will never work. If you’re going for mood, you can tag the tracks in your library, set up a playlist and filter that way. Can’t be done with Roon Radio.
