Roon strongly recommend a wired Ethernet connection for anything that is running Roon Server software as the Nucleus is.
You might be able to use a usb Wi-Fi dongle but I honestly don’t know if there are any recommendations of models that might work with the Nucleus.
thank you for your advice. So you’re saying it isn’t about whether I use Nucleus or not? One clarification - does it matter that all my music is actually FLAC on a local SSD drive?
I am new to Roon. My music is all on FLAC. I tried using Roon Nucleus One but the problem is that i dont have a wired connection close to the location of my DAC, receiver and speakers. Can someone please recommend a hardware options that will work seamlessly with Roon and won’t have restriction of wired internet.
@Robert_F thank you in advance for your help. My DAC is Schiit Modi which accepts inputs via USB or Optical or Coax. My Receiver is Onkyo which is fed by the DAC via RCA.
A Nucleus is one option for a Roon server, but not the only option. I use a Windows 11 PC, others use Macs or Linux servers. You can learn more about these options here:
If you use a PC, Mac, or Linux option, WiFi can be used but it may not be stable in your environment. I have had great results with using WiFi for Roon server, but now I hardware by W11 PC because it is always on and is connected directly to my router.
Option to connect your Modi to the network include using a WiiM streamer such as a WiiM Pro for Roon readiness (or a WiiM Mini which supports AirPlay 2), a Raspberry Pi solution, or many others depending if native Roon Ready support is required or AirPlay 2 or Google Cast is sufficient. I would recommend a streamer with optical or coax output for connecting directly to the Modi, which effectively enables the Modi to be a basic wireless streamer.
You don’t necessarily need a connection close to the location as long as the Nucleus is on a wired connection in the same network. Physical proximity does not matter in this case.
The endpoints like DACs can also be attached to network streamers and those can be on wifi if the wifi connection quality is reasonable.
You don’t need to place the Nucleus next to your DAC.
The Nucleus only needs a wired Ethernet connection to your router, and it can sit anywhere in your home.
If your DAC is far from the router, you have two options:
1. WiFi → Ethernet adapter (bridge)
This can let the Nucleus connect over WiFi, but not all adapters work reliably, and compatibility isn’t guaranteed.
2. Use a small network streamer next to your DAC (As recommended by @Robert_F )
Then the Nucleus stays wired to your router, and the streamer connects to your DAC.
A very popular option is RoPieee on a Raspberry Pi:
This will give you a stable Roon Ready endpoint over WiFi.
