Here we go again. I swear…I’ve been streaming for 20 years, and it seems every time I change Front-end/UIs…tagging needs to be tweaked. The good news is, I think ROON will support things I’ve always wished for in other UIs.
Let me start simple: I’ve put a (single) test album in my ROON Library, to “play” with. It happens to be a 2-disc set…that’s coming up as individual discs in ROON.
Everything matches in my tags. For my last UI (Eversolo), I needed a totaldiscs tag; i.e. discnumber 1/totaldiscs 2 (as opposed to the 1/2 2/2 standard I’ve used most everywhere else).
Thanks gents! That’s probably it Mike; my folder structure was CD1 - “subtitle”
But, while we’re on the subject…this is one of the things I was hoping ROON did. So, let’s use my test as an example (which is why I picked it)
The set is Deftones White Pony 20th Anniversary edition…where disc 1 is White Pony, and disc 2 is remixes titled Black Stallion.
For years, I have wanted a way to…a) collect both discs (multiple discs) under 1 title, but…b) add those “subtitles” so that they can be identified. (also, to distinguish between different resolutions of the same album, but ROON does that out of the box!)
Can ROON pull this off…and if so, what tag to use for the White Pony, Black Stallion data?
p.s. the folder rename, DID solve the split issue. Thanks!
@Chris_Lehner1 are you looking to do something like this (this is a “deluxe edition” version of a Fall album that includes single a/b sides and other bonus tracks)?
If so, I recommend using this guide, paying attention to the Work and Part tags under the Tagging Multi-Part Works section. It’s written for classical releases, but works perfectly for separating out sections of albums you want to call out (subtitle as you say) under a single release.
a) works, but b) doesn’t and there have been lots of feature requests for years. I don’t know if there is a most popular one and which it is, there are many:
Roon does not handle box sets well, hence why I am knowledgeable on the subject.
When Harman acquired Roon 2 yrs ago there were 3 areas that Harman said hey should fix , box sets is one of them. They canvassed several users for suggestions but so far we have seen nothing
If a box is a collection of previously released CD’s then adding a subtitle CD1 - Subtitle will force a split then you can create a Roon Tag and add the split albums to it
Alternatively externally set a FLAC tag ROONALBUMTAG = “Box Name” and on import Roon will create a Tag “Box Name”
The drawback is most compilation boxes will split but the individual discs don’t equate to a previously released album and won’t ID
In general its best to leave box sets alone , make sure album name is one value and Album artist is one value and then use the disc number tool to pick off a single disc
Not exactly. This is how Eversolo handles this set, which I like; I just wish…for example…after CD 2, it was more like CD 2 - Black Stallion.
I only asked, because I thought ROON sleighed all other UIs. But, if its got shortcomings like everything else…I suppose I’ll just make the best of things (and read some of these guides)
Not wishing to punt the opposition but with appropriate Custom Tags you can do it in JRiver. I keep all my really big boxes in JRiver as well . In Roon see Disc 1 etc , in JRiver I get (this is a simple one I have some up to 100+ CD)
Thanks Mike ONeil, but that’s kind of a different kettle of fish.
Yes…I get, that in this case the title in question is a 5-CD box of Carly Simon; but it’s 5 of her albums, packaged as a box. Maybe helpful for some, but…
My OP, was more about say a 3-CD set…where CD -1 is a new Remix of the original title, CD -2 is like Outtakes from the session and alternative versions…and maybe CD-3 is a live performance from the band, during this time period.
In this case, you wouldn’t…at least I wouldn’t…want a format like above.
Yeah, about that…let me back up, and ask this: does ROON scrape, irregardless to your tagging??
I mean, that seem crazy to me…because I’ve been tagging for 20 years; but…I can see that being a selling point, for a lot of 'philes who don’t want to bother.
it attempts to ID an album based on a mathematical ID which I believe is proprietary (calculated from track times I believe) and other key tags , Artist, album etc. The data source is either /or Tivo and MusicBrainz. If it fails to ID an album a lot of the “interlink magic” is lost as this metadata forms those links
Once ID’ed it will download the metadata connected with that album.
At all times you have the option to over-ride. Go to an album, see the 3 dots on the album artwork level and select Edit then Metadata Preference
You will see, from there its a matter of selection
Yep…saw and explored this. Again…and really, I’m not trying to bang on ROON…I was always of the opinion, ROON was the “best”, and that’s why it has its associated cost. Now, whether it’s “best” is a matter of opinion (and it certainly has its pluses). but…mostly, it’s “different”.
^ this thing, as an example. There really should be an option, to set the whole LIBRARY up this way…not to have to customize by each album. I get it…what if you want to override this album, or that? Well…then, options for the library…with the option to override.
I can’t imagine doing this for 1000, 3000, 5000+ titles
