Thanks. As mentioned, I have already maxed out things in the Audio Midi utility.
Just shooting in the dark here: When you go to Roon’s Device Setup menu for the Qutest is the volume control set to Device Volume? And, are the Volume Limits set to 100? Is Volume Leveling set to off?
I have it set to fixed volume. But I’ve tried the other settings (DSP and Device) and same lower than expected gain issue.
You got any other endpoint you can drive it from? Sorry, just might be better to take the Mac out of the equation to be sure.
Good suggestion. I’ll try connecting the DAC to another computer to see if my old MacBook (or some setting within it I simply cannot find) is the culprit
Even using your phone as endpoint would work too if you have right cable to connect to the qutest.
Try different loud pop / rock music instead of classical music.
Have you also checked with other inputs on preamp?
Yes I have
Take a look at the Audio Midi Setup of your Mac. There you can see what the master volume of your DAC is set to. If you set Roon to “fixed” it will not set the volume to max automatically. So lets say your volume is -10db when you switch to “fixed” it will stay at -10db but “fixed”… I fell for that once…
