And now something more straight ahead and very enjoyable. A live “super trio” date from 1995: Kenny Barron, Ray Drummond and Ben Riley. Very lively and well recorded. Available on Tidal and Qobuz and well worth a listen.
New discovery. This is very outside the box but still accessible. The songs are interesting but still very melodic. The band is tight and the recording is good. I’ve not heard of these guys, but I’m going to be looking into them more. Also, available on Bandcamp.
A major talent who died way too young at age 40. 28 years later and his music is still so vibrant and alive. Thomas Chapin will always be missed.
Here’s another major talent (one that you are sure to be familiar with) who died way too young. This is an excellent “starter” collection from Rhino, however it is not available for streaming.
When I picked up this recording I was really looking forward to hearing some vintage mid 1960s Bill Evans but the poorly recorded piano goes a long way in explaining why this recording went unreleased for 60 years. Nonetheless the playing is wonderful, which tends to make things a little tragic. Oh well, you can’t win them all. The radio host sounds like John Cleese imitating a British radio host
