In keeping with the Mingus theme. “Mingus” is Joni Mitchell’s jazz album. Recorded in 1978/79 with an unbelievable all-star lineup (Jaco, Shorter, Hancock, Erskine, etc.) and mastered by one of the vinyl mastering gods, Bernie Grundman. Sure it’s available in super duper high resolution on both Tidal and Qobuz but really are either of those digital versions going to sound as good as this all analog vinyl played on a Linn LP-12 with a Grado Reference cartridge?
I stumbled across a review for this today which talked me into listening and boy am I glad I did
Another 80s Miles spliced together from different live sessions
Not really the last as they played together later, but this has a valedictory feel and most of the classic MJQ pieces are here.
I think Ted Nash is not as well-known as he should be. This has an unusual combination of instruments that works quite well.
These albums you’ve been posting, one owner or thrift shop/record store finds?
One owner ,me, apart from the 10" L.P.’s which I bought from the original owner about 40 years ago.
Ah, the ubiquitous 1950s’ lip-dangling cig. Don’t see that much anymore.

I am not sure just why the allmusic reviewer (Scott Yanow) thinks these songs would be inappropriate for jazz, but they are not, especially in the hands (on the fingers?) of Hancock. Yanow even claims that none of these would ever become jazz standards; Tom Lord’s discography lists 176 jazz recordings of Norwegian Wood (to be clear - that song is on this album). And for a comparison, Norwegian Wood has more jazz recordings than Hancock’s Maiden Voyage.
