Now Playing Some Jazz [2021-2022]

A now for something completely different. One of David S. Ware’s best recordings. Available on Tidal but not Qobuz.

Been enjoying this album of late, especially Blue Rondo. Dave Brubeck and Take Five is one of my earliest memories at around 4 years old. Had a much older brother who played the Vinyl every morning at breakfast time for about 5-6 years apparently as TVs didn’t work in Far North Queensland in the very early 60’s.

As anyone following this excellent thread knows I tend to like my jazz on the free side  however I’m also a bit of jazz history buff and this 10 best list is really a treat: 10 Best of 1920s
The Louis Armstrong: The Complete Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings belongs in every jazz listener’s collection and is available (with some minor variations) on both Tidal and Qobuz.

Here are the 10 best for the 19302, 1940s and 1950s:
1930s
1940s
1950s
The 1960s should appear next week.

I found this wonderful and great sounding “bootleg” recording (actually it sounds like it could be sourced from the master of a radio broadcast), along with many other “bootleg” recordings from the likes of Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Bill Evans and others, on Qobuz. Tidal also has a large selection of these “bootleg” recordings. I’m using the term “bootleg” since as far as I can tell most of these recordings are live and appear to be taken from radio broadcasts and are not official releases. This Jarrett recording clocks in at just over two hours and is prime Jarrett. Give it a listen, unless of course you have issues with unofficial releases, which apparently Qobuz and Tidal do not.

One of my favorite Emily Remler recordings and sadly not on either Qobuz or Tidal. In fact, very few Remler recordings are available on Qobuz and Tidal, which is odd considering how much jazz is available on both services. Nonetheless Catwalk is an excellent recording, with nice compositions and wonderful playing by the quartet. Worth seeking out on either vinyl or CD.

Wouldn’t buy LPs here, but I guess CDs are ok.

Thanks for the heads up. Didn’t know there was such a thing.

That’s it, just an album cover image which, other than the actual audio, is exactly the same amount of information one gets from Roon about this wonderful new recording. The Balo Projekt, formerly the Baló István Projekt, is an Hungrian jazz group led by drummer Baló István. Discogs reveals that the Baló István Projekt was a quartet but, like Roon, Qobuz and Tidal, has no information on the Spring Wind recording.

I can tell you that the recording is available on Qobuz (in high resolution) and Tidal, is very well recorded with audiophile quality sound and features some really nice playing in, what would be called, the freer side of jazz. If you use either Qobuz or Tidal why not give it a listen.

Nice collection. I did say that Catwalk was one of my favorite Emily Remler recordings, what I failed to say is that every Emily Remler recording is worthwhile. Sadly she died very young at age 32 so there are way too few Emily Remler recordings and each should be cherished.
Plus there are these two releases:

Yes, I understood your message correctly… I was just joking. :sunglasses:

Just like you, I know jazz well and also quite well its musical technique.

Perhaps this book written by Geoff Page, Australian poet, published in 2019 could interest you as well as for others; moreover, it is in English.

Thank you also for your many contributions on the subject and your enlightened opinions. :+1:

After watching this video interview on Tidal last night, played on my TV via the Tidal app on Roku, I decided to give this Blanchard/Harrison vinyl a spin. By the way, there is more to both Qobuz and Tidal than just streaming music.
